Bridge to Kindergarten Social Story and Visual Schedule
My Transition Bridge
A Story About My Two Classrooms
Student:
I Am Growing Big and Strong!
I am 5 years old, and my brain is learning new things every single day. To help me grow, I get to spend time in two wonderful classrooms!
Room 1: EC Classroom
I start my day in my cozy EC room. I know the routines, my teachers, and where everything lives. I feel very safe here.
My Helping Helper
When it is time to transition, I can hold my favorite comfort item or carry my special transition folder. It goes wherever I go!
Room 2: Kindergarten
I am building my Kindergarten brain. There are new friends, fun centers, and kind teachers ready to welcome me!
My Safe Space
If I feel tired or overwhelmed, I can go to the Cozy Quiet Corner. I can take deep breaths, play with a sensory toy, and rest.
🤝
Everyone is on My Team!
My EC teachers and my Kindergarten teachers talk to each other every day. They both love me and will make sure I have what I need to succeed. I can do this step by step!

Essential Transition Guidelines
1. Bridging Comfort Items
Always ensure the student carries the designated transition folder or favorite sensory item during moves. Do not take it away; it establishes a physical bridge of safety between classrooms.
2. Sensory Space Access
The Kindergarten Cozy Corner is a high-priority refuge. Ensure it is quiet, familiar, and always available. Never use the sensory corner as a punishment or disciplinary timeout area.
Kinder Room Prep
- Sensory/Quiet Corner Setup: Beanbag, weighted lap pad, noise-canceling headphones, calm-down timer.
- Desk Location: Away from high-traffic zones (door/sink), adjacent to Quiet Corner and support staff chair.
- Desk Visual Schedule: Affix visual schedule track with Velcro for physical interactive engagement.
Target completion: 3 days prior to transition start.
Staff Readiness Check
- Shared Trigger Profile: EC and K staff must align on calming scripts, key words, and triggers (e.g., loud claps).
- Paraeducator Training: Align on silent cues, wait-time protocol, and physical space requirements.
- Peer Awareness Prep: Deliver a standard preschool neurodiversity/inclusion story reading to K peers.
To be executed by EC Teacher, K Teacher & assigned Para.
Anticipated Triggers & De-escalation Protocol
| Identified Trigger | Warning Signs | Immediate Intervention Script/Action |
|---|
| Physical Room Changes | Stopping in hallway, whimpering, drop/flop behaviors | "First EC room, then Kinder." Hand transition object, offer simple choices. |
| Sensory Overwhelm (K Noise) | Hands over ears, humming, seeking corner | Hand noise-canceling headphones without asking, prompt: "Walk to quiet corner." |
| Unstructured Downtime | Pacing, stimming with doors/cabinet latches | Hand closed-ended sensory task (e.g., matching board or sorting bin). |
Success Standard: Consistency is critical during the four-week transition window. In the event of minor refusal, prioritize reassuring visual routines and transition comfort items before changing schedules.

Transition Cooperation Scoring Key
Level 1 Smooth Walk Cooperated immediately; transitioned happily within 3 mins.
Level 2 Mild Hesitation Stopped/stalled; easily redirected with visual or comfort item.
Level 3 Active Distress Vocal refusal/crying; de-escalated in K Quiet Corner under 10 mins.
Level 4 Extreme Refusal Prolonged distress/meltdown; safety risk; required return to EC.
Observed Behaviors
Check all behaviors displayed during transition:
Vocal protest Pacing/Stalling Floor drops Stimming Running back Physical refusal
Potential Triggers Active
Identify triggers present during transition:
Loud school bell Crowded hallway Teacher hand clap Missing comfort item Bright lighting Sudden schedule shift

Baseline Progression Criteria
To safely move from the current transition phase to the next week's schedule, the student must achieve all three of the following benchmarks:
4 out of 5 Days at Level 1 or 2 The student transitions with minimal physical resistance and can be easily redirected using familiar support routines.
Rapid Cozy Corner De-escalation (Under 5 Mins) If Level 3 behaviors manifest, the student accepts redirection to the quiet corner and returns to a baseline state within 5 minutes.
