The 5-Minute Daily Routine
Short & Daily beats Long & Weekly
STEP 1 1 Minute
Mouth Warm-Up
Sit face-to-face or in front of a mirror. Model mouth shape and make the sound by itself 5 times.
"Watch my lips and teeth!"
STEP 2 3 Minutes
Practice Reps
Practice 5 to 8 target words. Aim for 15-20 crisp repetitions. High-five after each successful rep!
"Clear sound, great power!"
STEP 3 1 Minute
Sentence Bridge
Put 1 or 2 target words into a quick, silly sentence or short conversation before wrapping up.
"Can you say it in a sentence?"
The Sensory Cue Toolbox: How to Guide Your Child
Visual Cues ("Look")
Children learn so much by watching speech articulators move.
- Point to your mouth before saying the word.
- Use a bathroom mirror to compare mouth shapes.
- Exaggerate lip rounding or smiling motions.
Prompt: "Watch where my tongue goes!"
Auditory Cues ("Listen")
Help their ear catch the difference between the target and error.
- Stretch out the sound (e.g., "ssss-sun").
- Play "Sound Detective": Did you hear my target sound?
- Contrast pairs (e.g., "wing" vs. "ring").
Prompt: "Listen for the windy sound!"
Tactile Cues ("Feel")
Help them feel airflow, throat vibrations, and tongue contact.
- Hold a hand in front of lips to feel air puffs (p, t, k).
- Touch the throat to feel motor "buzz" (voiced sounds).
- Tap behind upper teeth for tongue-tip spot (t, d, l, n).
Prompt: "Can you feel the motor running?"
Parent Coaching Golden Rules
1
Model & Recast (Don't Demand)
If your child says "Look at the tat!", avoid "Say it right!" Instead, smile and recast: "Yes, look at that fluffy cat!"
2
Specific Effort Praise (3:1 Rule)
Give 3 praises for trying to every 1 gentle correction. Praise the exact behavior: "I loved how you tucked your tongue back that time!"
3
Always Stop on a Win
If fatigue or frustration sets in, drop down to an easier level (like sound in isolation) so the child finishes with success and pride.
4
Gamify the Reps
Use quick tabletop challenges: roll a die for points, play a round of Uno or Connect 4, pull a Jenga block, or shoot a paper basketball after each 3 reps!
Consistency Creates Brain Pathways
Practicing 5 minutes every single day trains oral muscles 10x faster than 30 minutes once a week.

• Daily School Recap "What was the first thing you did at school today? What happened last?"
3. Following Multi-Step Directions
Working Memory & Auditory Processing
Level 1
1-Step with Descriptor
Practice specific adjectives, colors, or spatial concepts.
“Put the heavy blue book under the couch.”
Level 2
2-Step Related
Two actions that naturally belong to the same activity.
“Take off your shoes and put them on the mat.”
