Lesson Focus: Multisyllabic C-le (Consonant-le) Patterns
Learning Objectives
- Identify the Consonant-le (C-le) syllable pattern at the end of words.
- Apply the "count back three" rule to decode multisyllabic words.
- Encode (spell) multisyllabic C-le words with 80% accuracy.
Materials Needed
- Gear Workshop Slides
- Blueprints for Success Worksheets
- Syllable Mechanic Cards (Sets A & B)
- Scissors and glue sticks
1. Direct Instruction (I Do)
Introduce the Consonant-le syllable (also known as the C-le syllable). Explain that this syllable always comes at the end of a word and the 'e' is silent. Note: This lesson focuses primarily on -cle endings, but the rule applies to any Consonant-le.
"Class, today we are syllable mechanics! When we see a word ending in -le, we look at the consonant before it. We count back three letters from the end: 1 (e), 2 (l), 3 (consonant). That's where we break the gear!"
2. Guided Practice (We Do)
Use the Syllable Mechanic Cards. Practice breaking words like cir / cle, un / cle, and i / ci / cle.
- Focus on the "Count Back 3" strategy.
- Highlight that the syllable *before* the C-le can be open or closed.
3. Independent Practice (You Do)
Students complete the Blueprints for Success worksheet. They will identify, divide, and spell multisyllabic words with the C-le pattern.

Scaffolding & Differentiation
Visual Support:
Use highlighters to mark the -le unit and the consonant before it. Color-code the syllables.
Kinesthetic:
Have students use "karate chops" or move physical syllable tiles to divide the words.
Encoding Tip:
Remind students: "If you hear /ul/ at the end, it's almost always Consonant + LE."
