Objective
Students will identify and demonstrate equivalent fractions using wholes, halves, and fourths through visual and hands-on activities.
Audience
Elementary Students (Severe Autism). Focused on visual models and repetitive practice.
Why this matters

Materials Needed
- Visual Fraction Tiles: Printed and cut sets (one per student)
- Slide Deck: Ready on large display
- Matching Worksheet: Printed copies
- Art Supplies: Crayons or Markers
Preparation (15m)
- • Review lesson plan and slides.
- • Cut out fraction tiles for each student.
- • Laminate tiles for durability if possible.
- • Set up whiteboard display.
Step-by-Step Guide

Warm-Up: What's a Whole?
- Hold up a whole circle. Ask: "What is this?" Guide to: "A whole!"
- Show Slide 1.
- Hand out whole tiles. Have students touch them and say "Whole!"

Introducing Halves
- Show whole vs. two halves. Say: "Two equal parts... Halves!"
- Model putting halves together. "Two halves make one whole!"
- Show Slides 2 & 3.
- Students place two halves on top of their whole tile to see equivalence.

Discovering Fourths
- Show whole vs. four fourths. Say: "Four equal parts... Fourths!"
- Model putting four fourths together. "Four fourths make one whole!"
- Show Slides 4 & 5.
- Students place four fourths on top of their whole tile.

Equivalent Fractions: Halves and Fourths
- Hold up one half tile. Ask: "How many fourths make one half?"
- Students cover a half tile with fourths. "Two fourths is one half!"
- Show Slide 6.
- Distribute Matching Worksheet. Match by coloring or drawing lines.
