Sam was on the playground . He looked at the big kids playing kickball . They looked so fast and strong. Sam felt small. His heart went thump, thump, thump.
"Do you want to play?" asked Maya. Maya was his best friend. She was also the captain of the blue team.
"I am not good at kicking," Sam said. "My legs feel like heavy logs."
Maya smiled. "That is why we practice ! We are teammates , remember? We help each other."
Maya took a bright orange kickball out of a large plastic contain er. She rolled it gently toward Sam. "Keep your eye on the ball, Sam! Take your time."

Kickball Showdown (Continued) Fluency Passage & Questions
Sam took a deep breath. He ran up and swung his foot. BAM! The ball flew straight up like an airplane ! It did not go far, but it felt good.
"Yes!" yelled Maya. "That was a great start!"
Just then, the school bell rang for recess to start. All the kids ran to the field. Sam stood on first base. His hands were shaking, but he saw Maya give him a thumbs-up. He felt like he could cross a fast subway track to make a play.
The other team kicked a huge ball high over the fence. It painted a giant arc in the sky like a rainbow . Sam ran, jumped, and caught it with both hands!
"Out!" called the helper. Sam’s whole team began to cheer. He had done it. He had helped his team win. Sam was not scared anymore. He was a kickball star!
