On January 23, 1960, two brave explorers named Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh stepped inside a tiny steel cabin. Their deep-sea vessel was called the Trieste. Their mission was to dive seven miles down to the deepest place on planet Earth: the Challenger Deep in the Pacific Ocean.
As the Trieste began its dive, the warm sunlight quickly faded. At 1,000 feet, the ocean turned dark blue. By 3,000 feet, they entered the freezing "Midnight Zone" where sunlight never reaches. Outside, the water pressure squeezed the thick steel walls with crushing force. The crew could only see by using their strong searchlights in the black water.
Deep in the dark, at 32,400 feet, a loud CRACK! echoed inside their small cabin. The vessel shook. A window had cracked from the heavy weight of the water. Even though they were terrified, they decided to keep going. They wanted to make history, and they were too deep to turn back now.
After five hours of diving, their lights hit the flat ocean floor. They had landed at 35,800 feet! To their surprise, a flat fish swam past their window. This proved that life could survive in the cold, dark deep sea. After twenty minutes, they began their safe trip back up to the sunny surface.
