Story: Gail and the Spelling Tree
VCe & R-Controlled Reader
Gail Day was a smart girl who won first place in spelling. She told how her teacher, Miss Baker, made her a top speller. “Miss Baker had a fine way to teach,” Gail said with a smile. “She made a spelling tree on a large chart. The trunk stood for a sound, like the long sound in cake. Each branch held words for that sound, like flame and stake. We also made branches for r-sounds like park and star. The trees helped us track each pattern. When spelling was hard, Miss Baker gave me a large book to take home. I read more and more by the fire after dark. That is how I became a spelling star!”
