Guided Missions & Differentiation Protocol

RF.2.3.b Mastery

Phase 3 • 12 min

Guided Practice (We Do)

Use Slide 6 (Live Code Crack). Guide students through decoding 4 target words with sound buttons:

  1. Step 1: Circle the vowel pattern (igh in flight).
  2. Step 2: State the vowel sound aloud in unison (/ī/).
  3. Step 3: Blend onset & rime (/fl/ + /īt/ = flight).
  4. Step 4: Quick-choral thumbs up if the vowel said its own name.

Engagement Tip: Have students tap their desk for consonants and sweep their hand for vowel teams!

Phase 4 • 15 min

Independent Mission (You Do)

Distribute the 2-page Vowel Codebreaker Dossier:

  • • Mission 1 (Vault Sort): Categorize 15 mixed words into the 5 long vowel vaults (A, E, I, O, U).
  • • Mission 2 (Clue Fill-Ins): Complete partial words with correct vowel patterns.
  • • Mission 3 (Decoder Riddle): Uncover secret punchline using pattern-matched letters.
  • • Mission 4 & 5: Sentence context proofing & field report writing.

Teacher Role: Circulate with clipboard, checking for silent-e omission and vowel team confusion.

Detective Alert: Common Vowel Misconceptions & Teacher Fixes

1. Silent-E Reversal / Dropping

Students read cape as “cap” or spell cube as “cub”.

Fix: Draw an arrow from 'e' jumping over the consonant to tap the vowel.

2. Misplacing ai vs ay / oa vs ow

Students write “trayn” or “plaie”.

Fix: Anchor rule: English words rarely end in 'i' or 'u' — 'y' and 'w' save the end!

3. The Long U Two Sounds

Confusion between /yoo/ (mule) and /oo/ (flute).

Fix: Explain both belong to the Long U family; lips pucker either way!

Targeted Differentiation Strategies

Support / Striving Readers & MLLs

  • Provide 5 colored highlighters (one color per vowel family: Yellow=A, Green=E, Blue=I, Orange=O, Purple=U).
  • Use magnetic letters to physically insert and remove silent ‘e’.
  • Reduce Mission 1 word count from 15 to 10 words.

Extension / Advanced Codebreakers

  • Challenge with multisyllabic words (sunlight, teacup, daydream, rainbow, rescue).
  • Ask students to create their own 3-word detective code cipher for a classmate to crack.
  • Explore homophones with differing vowel teams (plain/plane, meat/meet, road/rode).

Quick Formative Exit Check (5 Minutes) Target Mastery: 80%+ on Dossier

Before collecting dossiers, write these three words on the board: snail, flight, stone. Have each student hold up fingers (1=Long A, 2=Long E, 3=Long I, 4=Long O, 5=Long U) to instantly check individual mastery!

  1. The brave detective packed a flashlight to see in the dark ________.

nite night nyte

  1. A gentle summer breeze helped the small sailboat ________ across the bay.

flote float flowt

  1. The lost dog was trapped on the rocks until the team arrived to ________ him.

rescu reskew rescue

5 Mission 5: Detective Field Report

Sentence Writing

Write two original detective sentences. Underline the long vowel word you used in each sentence!

Sentence 1: Use a word with Long A (e.g., train, brave, stay) OR Long E (e.g., sleep, clean, dream):

Sentence 2: Use a word with Long I (e.g., bright, prize), Long O (e.g., stone, boat), OR Long U (e.g., clue, flute):

Agent Verification: Keep this dossier in your detective portfolio. Page 2 of 2

Distractor Analysis

  1. “...in the dark night.”

Distractors: nite is nonstandard phonetic spelling; nyte misapplies 'y'.

  1. “...helped the small sailboat float across the bay.”

Distractors: flote is missing 'a'; flowt puts 'ow' inappropriately in medial position.

  1. “...arrived to rescue him.”

Distractors: rescu drops terminal 'e'; reskew uses informal phonetic 'ew'.

5 Mission 5 Key: Exemplar Sentences (2 Points)

Accept Realistic Student Variation

Sentence 1 Exemplar (Target: Long A or Long E):

“The secret agent rode the fast train to inspect the secret lab.”

Criteria: Must include an underlined word featuring an authentic Long A or Long E pattern.

Sentence 2 Exemplar (Target: Long I, Long O, or Long U):

“We followed every tiny clue until we unlocked the iron safe.”

Criteria: Must include an underlined word featuring an authentic Long I, Long O, or Long U pattern.

Holistic Scoring & Next-Step Action Rubric

Mastery (26–30 Pts)

Fluent sorting and spelling across all 5 vowels. Ready for multisyllabic decoding challenge!

Approaching (20–25 Pts)

Isolated confusion on position rules (ai/ay or oa/ow). Review Slide 3 & 4 generalization cards.

Intervention (<20 Pts)

Difficulty distinguishing vowel teams from silent-e. Pull for small-group multisensory tile work.
