TIER 3
Purpose
To provide a low-stress, one-on-one opportunity for a student with anxiety to process their thoughts and insights from the Calm Connections Challenge, reinforcing their executive functioning skills without the pressure of group presentation.
Create a Safe Space
Ensure a quiet, comfortable environment where the student feels secure and unobserved by peers. Maintain a calm and reassuring tone throughout.
Start Gently
Begin by acknowledging their effort on the Calm Connections Challenge. Avoid direct eye contact if the student seems overwhelmed; look at their work together instead.
Active Listening
Rephrase their responses to show understanding. Validate their feelings about challenges. Use "I notice..." rather than "Why did you...".
Focus on Process
Shift the focus from the final product to the thinking process. Highlight the specific EF skill they explored (Flexibility, Planning, or Organization).
Conversation Anchors
"Can you tell me about this part of your drawing/writing?"
Goal: Open-ended exploration without "right" or "wrong" answers.
"It sounds like you really thought about [Skill]. How does that help you feel more prepared?"
Goal: Connecting the EF skill to emotional regulation and success.
"What's one small win you had with this skill recently?"
Goal: Building self-efficacy and confidence.

Calm Corner Conversation (Tier 3 Support)
Context
Designed for a single student who experiences anxiety. Conduct this separately from the main group activity in a quiet, designated space.
Materials Needed
Student's completed Calm Connections work, and the Conversation Guide .
1
Opening the Conversation
"Hi [Student's Name]. Thanks for taking the time to work on your Calm Connections Challenge. I really appreciate your effort and how thoughtfully you engaged with the prompts."
"There's no pressure at all, but I'd love to just chat for a few minutes about what you worked on, if you're comfortable with that. We can just talk about your thoughts, no need for perfect answers."
Tip: If the student seems hesitant, offer an out: "We can just look at what you created, or talk about something else."
2
Initial Exploration
"I noticed you chose to focus on [Skill/Prompt]. Can you tell me a little bit about what you drew or wrote here? What was on your mind when you were working on this?"
Note: Listen actively and rephrase points to show understanding.
3
Focused Skill Discussion
Choose the path that matches the student's work:
Flexibility Path
"What did it feel like in that moment when things changed? How did you decide to adjust?"
"How does being flexible in situations like that help you stay calm?"
Organization Path
"What made you decide to organize that way? What was the benefit?"
"How do you think being organized helps you feel less stressed or more prepared?"
Planning Path
"What steps did you think about when you were planning for that?"
"Why is planning out your steps helpful for reaching your goals?"
4
Closing
"Thank you for sharing with me today. I can see how much you've grown in using these 'super skills.' Remember, it's okay to feel anxious sometimes—these skills help navigate those feelings."
"Is there one 'super skill' you'd like to practice just a little bit more this week? No pressure, just keep it in mind."
