Why This Activity?
This lesson leverages interactive digital tools to make abstract sequencing concrete for nonverbal students. By reducing the motor demands of traditional writing and providing high-contrast visual feedback, students can focus entirely on cognitive number recognition and order.
Instructional Steps
Step 01
Introduction
3 MINS
Greet the student warmly. Set the stage for "Number Quest." Explain that today we are digital explorers finding the right path for our numbers 0-20. Check for student comfort and ensure the digital device is positioned optimally for their reach/vision.
Step 02
Demonstration
5 MINS
Open the Number Quest Slides. Model how to "read" the number and identify the quantity. Demonstrate dragging numbers into the sequence placeholders. If the student uses eye-gaze or switch access, demonstrate how the digital tool responds to their specific input method.
Step 03
Guided Practice
7 MINS
Support the student in completing the first few slides. Use least-to-most prompting (e.g., visual cue → gestural prompt → light physical assist). Focus on 0-10 first before moving to 11-20. Praise every effort with high-energy positive reinforcement (thumbs up, high fives, or favorite sounds).
Step 04
Independent Exploration
3 MINS
Provide the Pixel Sequence Worksheet. Allow the student to use stickers, stamps, or digital drawing tools to match numbers. Observe their natural strategy for sequencing—do they start at 0 or look for familiar numbers first?
Step 05
Closure
2 MINS
Celebrate the completion of the Quest! Use a favorite song or a visual "Digital Badge." Discuss (or model via AAC device) what they liked most. Record progress on number identification for data tracking.
Facilitator Pro-Tips
Wait Time: Nonverbal students may need 5-10 seconds of processing time before responding.
High Contrast: Ensure digital brightness is high and distractions are low for better focus.

Assessment Guidelines
Met Criteria:
Correctly identifies missing numbers or matches at least 2/3 object groups with independent effort.
Next Steps:
If sequencing is difficult, revert to digital matching for numbers 0-5 before progressing to physical worksheets.
