Owen the owl lived near a flowing river. He loved to watch the water go. One warm day, Owen saw a small boat floating. It had a big, red sail. "Oh, what a fine boat!" Owen hooted. He wished he could go for a float. He knew a kind old toad named Croak who owned many boats. Owen flew to Croak's home, which was a cozy hole in an old oak tree.
"Hello, Croak!" hooted Owen. "I saw your beautiful boat. May I go for a ride?" Croak, who was slow and stout, said, "Ho ho, Owen! Of course! Follow me down to the water." They went to the river bank. Croak helped Owen into the boat. Owen sat on a soft cushion. The boat began to float slowly down the river. Owen saw a big, fat goat eating grass on the bank. He waved his wing. The goat gave a loud 'maaa' sound. Owen felt the gentle breeze blow. He saw a rainbow over the water. He was so happy he began to sing a low, soft song. It was wonderful to just go with the flow.

New Blue Fruit
Sue loved to try new foods. Her mom told her they were going to the market to buy some exotic fruit. "Exotic means unusual and special," her mom explained. Sue was excited! Sue hoped they would find blue fruit or fruit that looked like tiny jewels. When they got to the market, it was full of people. The air smelled of fresh bread and sweet peaches.
Finally, they came to a stall with many colorful fruits. "Look, Mom!" Sue pointed. There was a big, purple fruit that looked like a football. "That's a dragon fruit," her mom said. "And over here, look at these small, blue berries! These are called 'huckleberries'. They are a true blue fruit!" Sue tried one. It was sweet and juicy. "Can we buy a big bag of these?" she asked. Her mom smiled. "Of course! And let's get some kiwi and guava, too." Sue felt very lucky to try all this new, true fruit. She knew she would enjoy a big bowl of her new blue fruit when they got home.
Passage 6
A Great Day Outside
Jay and his little sister, Leah, loved to play outside. Today was a great day for it! The sun was bright, and a cool breeze blew gently. "Let's go to the creek!" Jay shouted. Leah clapped her hands with glee. They lived on a farm, so their creek was always full of things to see.
First, they saw three busy bees flying around a sweet flower. Jay spotted a tiny snail on a wet leaf near the water. They saw a bright blue dragonfly zoom past. Jay even saw a fat toad leap into the water with a splash. Leah threw a small stick into the water, and they watched it float down the stream. She found a pretty gray feather. Jay picked up a smooth, flat stone and skipped it across the water. It made five small hops before it sank. They stayed by the creek, listening to the birds sing and the water flow. It was truly a perfect day to be outside and see all the amazing things nature had to show.

Brad's Trip to the Pond
Brad wanted to build a strong fort. He needed a plan. He talked to his friend, Clint. "Clint, can you help me find some big branches?" Brad asked. Clint was glad to help. They grabbed their bright green wagon. "Let's check by the pond," Clint said.
They walked through the tall grass. Brad spotted a bright blue dragonfly as it flew past. They heard a loud croak. "That's a frog!" Clint whispered. Soon, they reached the pond. Many broken branches lay on the ground. Some were long, like great sticks. Others were short and thick. They began to drag the branches to their wagon. Clint found a flat stone. He tried to skip it across the water. It only made one splash. Brad saw a small boat slowly float by. It was painted red and white. They worked hard, and soon the wagon was full. Brad felt proud of their strong branches. They had a great plan for their fort now.

The Pink Tent
Pam and her brother, Kent, loved to camp in their backyard. Tonight was camping night! They had a new pink tent. It was quite small, but perfect for them. "Kent, help me get the tent from the shed," Pam said. Kent rushed to help.
First, they laid out the tent. It was a bright pink color. Then, they looked for the poles. "Here are the long, strong poles!" Kent exclaimed. They carefully put the poles into the tent fabric. Soon, the tent stood up, looking proud and pink. Pam brought out two soft blankets and two flashlights. Kent grabbed a bag of chips and some cold juice. "Don't forget the storybook!" Pam reminded him. They crawled inside the tent. It felt cozy and warm. Pam shined her flashlight on the tent roof, making funny shadows. Kent giggled. They planned to tell spooky stories, but they were too comfy and soon fell fast asleep in their little pink tent.

Clint's Camp Trip
Clint was packed for his first camp trip. His dad, Frank, helped him. They would drive to a big state park far from their town. Clint had his bright blue backpack. It felt quite full. He had his flashlight, a map, and a box of trail mix.
"Don't forget your warm hat, Clint," his dad reminded him. "It gets cold at night in the mountains." Clint zipped up his coat. They put the tent, sleeping bags, and a big cooler into the car. The drive was long. Clint saw green fields and tall, dark forests. He spotted a brown deer standing near a stream. When they arrived, Frank quickly set up the tent. Clint helped unpack the car. The air smelled fresh and clean. They built a small fire. Clint roasted a hot dog on a long stick. Later, they looked up at the night sky. The stars were so bright, like tiny diamonds sprinkled everywhere. Clint felt happy.

The Rainy Day Play
Rain, rain, go away! That's what Liz and Mae thought when they woke up. It was pouring outside! They had planned to play in the park, but now they were stuck inside. "What can we do?" Mae groaned. Liz had an idea. "Let's put on a play!"
They rushed to their dress-up box. Liz found a long, blue gown and a sparkling crown. She would be the queen. Mae found a big, floppy hat and a fake mustache. He would be the king. They used a blanket for a stage curtain. Liz announced the show to their stuffed animals. The play was about a brave queen and a silly king who saved their kingdom from a grumpy dragon. They used funny voices and made up new parts as they went along. They laughed and laughed. By the time the play was over, the rain had stopped. But Liz and Mae didn't even notice. They had too much fun with their rainy day play. It was a day full of joy and imagination.
