Common Obstacles
Over-Acceleration: Students often try to "win" by going to 4x speed. Remind them that comprehension is the goal, not speed alone.
Auditory Fatigue: Listening at high speeds is tiring. Encourage 5-minute breaks between the Narrative and Technical tests.
I. The Hook (10 min)
Start by playing a familiar narrative text (like a movie summary or a sports recap) at 1.0x speed. Ask students if it's too slow. Then, jump immediately to 3.0x. Ask: "Who understood that?"
"Most of our school day happens at 1x speed. But your brain can handle a Ferrari-speed intake of information if you train it. Today, we find your top gear."
II. Direct Instruction (15 min)

Neural vs. Robotic
Explain the difference. Neural = AI, better flow, less fatigue. Robotic = Legacy, better for extreme speeds because the syllables don't 'smear' as much.

The "Speed Stepping" Protocol
Teach them to increase by 0.1x or 0.25x steps. Jumping from 1x to 2x causes the brain to shut down; gradual increments allow the auditory cortex to adapt.
III. The Lab Activity (45 min)
Phase 1: Narrative
Suggested texts: Creepypastas, short stories, movie reviews. These are high-interest and have natural flow, allowing for higher speeds.
Phase 2: Technical
Suggested texts: Science textbook chapters, historical primary sources. These require more "CPU" from the brain to process vocabulary. Speeds will likely be lower.
Facilitation Tip:
Walk around and ask students to "Summarize the last 3 sentences" while they are at their max speed. If they can't, tell them to step it down one notch. This is the real test of calibration.
IV. Closing (10 min)
Have students record their "Personal Best" for both categories on a post-it note or in their digital planner. Ask: "How much time would you save in college if you read at 2x speed for 4 years?"
