SIGNAL SYNC
Bridging Perspective and Empathy Gaps
Internal vs. External
Internal Signal
How YOU feel.
Example: "I am upset and overwhelmed."
External Signal
What THEY see.
Example: "You look quiet or serious."
"Sometimes people look at the External Signal and miss the Internal Signal entirely."
The Empathy Barrier
The "Why" Trap
When you are upset, friends might ask "Why?"
They want facts, but you need support . It feels like an interrogation.
The Logic Trap
People try to "solve" your feelings or explain why you shouldn't be upset.
This is an Empathy Glitch . They are on the wrong frequency.
Control vs. Confusion
Your Control
You have ways of managing your mood (taking space, using fidgets) that keep you safe.
Their Confusion
Others might think you are "acting out" because they don't understand your strategy.
"I'm in control, even if it looks different to you."
Bridging the Gap
"I don't need to explain WHY I'm upset.
I just need you to be my friend."
This is a Signal Reset. It stops the interrogation.
The Interrogation:
"Why are you upset?"
The Bridge:
"I'm managing this. Can you just listen?"
Troubleshooting Flow
1
DETECT
I am upset. People are asking too many questions.
2
IDENTIFY
This is an Empathy Barrier (The "Why Trap").
3
REPAIR
Use a Reset Script to ask for what you need.
Scenario Lab
Scenario A: The "Why" Trap
A friend sees you are upset and asks "Why? What happened?" three times in a row.
Choose Your Mission:
• Direct: "Cut to the chase" script
• Draw: Sketch the solution
• Map: Plan the bridge
Scenario B: The Logic Fix
You are frustrated. A friend says "Just stop being mad, it's easy. Do this instead."
Choose Your Mission:
• Director: Tell us what happens next
• Script: Write the perfect reset
• Team Up: Solve together

Tier 3 Intervention • ND-Affirming Strategies
Key Objectives
Differentiate between Internal Signals and External Signals .
Recognize "Empathy Barriers" (The Why Trap & Logic Trap).
Practice communicating needs via flexible engagement (not just role-play).
Adaptive Materials
For Teacher:
• Signal Sync Slides
• Scenario Challenges
For Students:
• Connection Map
• Perspective Script Cards
• Challenge Sheets
Performance-Free Practice
If a student is role-play resistant: Use Director Mode (student describes actions), Script Doctoring (student writes corrections), or Comic Strip sketching.
Session Flow
10 MIN
Signal Awareness
Contrast Internal Signal vs. External Signal . Discuss why "Why?" feels like a logic-interrogation when emotions are high.
15 MIN
Empathy Reset Strategy
Introduce Perspective Scripts . Frame them as "Self-Calibration Tools." Practice "Director Mode" where the student tells you how a person should use the card.
20 MIN
Scenario Lab (Choice-Based)
Use the Scenario Challenges . Offer the 4 options: Role-play, Direct, Script, or Draw. allow the student to choose their comfort level.
10 MIN
Self-Calibration Reflection
Focus on identifying one strategy for managing an empathy gap that doesn't involve "explaining" the feeling.
ND-Affirming Tip
Respect the "no role-play" boundary as a form of self-advocacy. Use figurines, drawings, or written scripts to reduce the social pressure of performance while still practicing the cognitive skill.
Signal Script Cards Perspective Script Cards
Cut along the dashed lines! Bridge the gap when friends don't "get it."
Signal Repair: The Why Trap
"I don't need to explain why I'm upset right now. I just need you to be my friend."
Use when: Someone keeps asking "Why?" instead of being supportive.
Signal Repair: Empathy
"Can we just skip the questions for a bit and just hang out?"
Use when: You need support, but you aren't ready to talk.
Signal Repair: Control
"This is how I manage things. I'm in control, even if it looks different."
Use when: People think you are "lost" but you are actually managing.
Signal Repair: Perspective
"What I'm feeling is different from what you see. Can you trust me?"
Use when: You feel a disconnect between your inside and outside.
Signal Repair: Space
"I'm upset and I need space. It's not about you, I just need a signal reset."
Use when: You are overwhelmed and need space from everyone.
Signal Repair: Validation
"I'm not asking for a solution. I just want you to know I'm having a hard time."
Use when: People try to "fix" your mood instead of just listening.

Ask for what you actually need:
"Can you just sit with me?"
"I don't need a solution."
"I'm in control."
