Life in the Midnight Ocean

[¶1] The abyss is the deepest part of the ocean. It is very cold and completely dark because sunlight cannot reach it. The water also has heavy pressure . This means the heavy water squeezes everything like a giant hand. Human lungs would be crushed instantly here. But deep-sea animals have special bodies that do not get squished.
[¶2] Because it is dark, many deep-sea animals make their own light. This is called bioluminescence (bio-glow). They mix natural chemicals inside their bodies to shine. For example, the female Anglerfish has a glowing bulb on her head. She uses this bright light to lure curious little fish closer, then she eats them!
[¶3] Deep-sea fish do not have hard, heavy bones. Instead, their bones are made of soft, bendy cartilage (like the soft stuff in your ears). They also have jelly-like skin. Because their bodies are made of water and soft jelly, the heavy ocean pressure cannot squeeze or crack them.
[¶4] Plants cannot grow in the dark, so there is no sunlight-driven food. Instead, food falls from the top of the ocean. This food is called marine snow . It is made of tiny bits of dead plants and animals that float down like snowflakes. Animals crawl along the muddy ocean floor to eat this snow.

Warm Blood in Freezing Places

[¶1] Polar areas are extremely cold. In the winter, the temperature gets much colder than your freezer! This cold weather is very dangerous for living cells. Because animal cells are mostly filled with water, cold weather can freeze them. When water freezes, it expands (gets bigger) and forms sharp, pointy ice crystals . These sharp crystals can poke, tear, and break cells.
[¶2] To stop this damage, some polar fish have developed antifreeze proteins inside their blood. These special proteins latch onto microscopic ice crystals before they grow too big. This stops the crystals from poking and breaking their blood cells. Because of this, their blood stays liquid even in freezing salt water!
[¶3] Warm-blooded polar animals, like wolves, ducks, and penguins, have another clever trick. They use a system called countercurrent exchange to keep their blood warm. This happens inside the blood vessels of their legs. In a normal body, cold legs cool down the whole animal. But in polar animals, warm pipes and cold pipes are twisted tightly together.
[¶4] Warm blood coming down from the heart runs right next to icy blood coming back up from the cold feet. The hot blood warms up the cold blood before it reaches the heart. This keeps the animal's heart and core organs at a safe, warm temperature. It also keeps their feet from losing too much heat to the snow!

Staying Cool in the Hot Desert

[¶1] Deserts are very hot and dry. It rarely rains, and the hot sun shines all day. This extreme heat is dangerous. Without water, an animal's body can suffer from desiccation (drying out). When an animal dries out, its body cannot function properly. To survive, desert species have developed clever tricks to save every drop of moisture.
[¶2] One clever trick is called estivation . This is a long summer sleep. When the desert gets too hot and dry, animals like the African bullfrog go deep under the sand. They make a thick slime cocoon around their skin. This cocoon acts like plastic wrap, keeping existing water locked inside their bodies while they sleep.
[¶3] Other desert animals have redesigned their internal bodies to save water. The kangaroo rat, for example, has super kidneys. These organs recycle water inside its body, letting them excrete very dry waste. They also have cold noses that catch water vapor when they breathe out. This puts moisture back into their throat!
[¶4] Kangaroo rats also make metabolic water inside their cells. They do not need to drink liquid water pools. Instead, when they digest dry seeds, their cells perform a chemical reaction to split and blend molecules into fresh, clean water!
