Teacher Note: Observe their behavior. Many will be scanning intensely, some might try to calculate the gaps in their heads. Usually, fewer than 20% can find the gap accurately in 10s.
Phase 2: The Visual Shift
"Now, look at the exact same information, but visualized as time blocks on a calendar grid. Same goal: Find that one-hour gap. Go!"
Teacher Note: Students should identify the gap almost instantly (2-3 seconds). The cognitive "Aha!" moment happens here.

Lesson 2 Hook: The WIP Limit Simulation
Objective
Physically simulate a workflow bottleneck to demonstrate how "Work In Progress" (WIP) overload stops productivity and creates cognitive stress.

The Setup
Divide a whiteboard into three columns: RAW , ASSEMBLY , and QUALITY CONTROL . Recruit 3 student volunteers.
Round 1: The Push System (Chaos)
No WIP Limits. Just work as fast as you can.
Student A (Raw): Writes a random 5-digit number on a sticky note and "pushes" it to Assembly as fast as possible.
Student B (Assembly): Must draw a perfect circle around the number and a triangle on the back.
Student C (QC): Must verify the number matches a "master list" you provide and initial the note.
The Result: Student B will likely have a massive pile of sticky notes on their desk. This pile represents Stress and Backlog . QC will be sitting idle or waiting. Quality will drop.
Round 2: The Pull System (Flow)
WIP Limit of 2 for every station.
Rule: Student A cannot write a new note until Student B has a free space (max 2 on their desk). Student B cannot give to QC until QC has a free space.
The Result: The room will feel quieter and more organized. Even though people might be "idle" occasionally, the notes move to "Done" more consistently and with fewer errors.

If the class is large, run two 'factory lines' simultaneously—one with WIP limits and one without—and time how long it takes to get 10 Initialed notes to the Finish line. The WIP limit line usually wins because of fewer "re-dos" and smoother flow.
