Intervention Facilitation Master Guide Reset Space Rangers β’ 3rd-5th Grade Curriculum
Intervention Facilitation Master Guide
Grade 3-5 Autonomic Regulation
Curriculum Overview & Biological Focus
This 8-session, Tier 3 intensive behavioral intervention is designed to replace dangerous flight or hiding behaviors (such as bolting from the room or crawling under desks and heavy furniture) with a safe, structured replacement routine: traveling to a designated "Reset Space" / "Calm Down Station" equipped with comforting, quiet, and sensory regulation tools.
Target Behaviors Bolting, running, or crawling under furniture
Replacement Routine Paced travel to designated "Reset Space"
Learning Target
Students learn that when classroom pressure builds, they can escape the pressure , but they must do so by walking safely to the designated "Ranger Station" (Reset Space) rather than running or hiding under furniture.
Success Criteria
I can identify sympathetic stress spikes in my body.
I can request transition using my "Reset Pass."
I can walk directly with slow steps on the runway.
I can use quiet tools to activate parasympathetic calm.
Behavioral Coaching Framework (Model-Lead-Test)
M
Model (I Do)
The coach acts out a common classroom trigger (e.g., failing a test) and highlights the autonomic flight urge: "My heart is racing. I want to slide under this heavy desk to escape. But that spot is dark and dusty. I will hold up my pass and walk to my safe Reset Station instead."
L
Lead (We Do)
The coach guides the student to practice together. First, we identify our somatic stress signals (racing heart, wobbly legs). Then, we practice waving the "Reset Pass" and walking slowly and directly along the "Reset Runway."
T
Test (You Do)
The coach presents a high-stress academic scenario. The student must notice their body rumbles, wave their pass, travel independently with slow, safe steps to the Reset Space, and complete 1 minute of tool-based cooling.

Phase 1: Finding Our Safe Escape & Somatic Warning Signals
Sessions 1 & 2 Facilitation Plans
Session 1
The Ranger Station (Comparing Hiding Spot Comfort Levels)
Goal: Differentiate dark, uncomfortable hiding spots (under desks/tables) from our warm, inviting designated Reset Station . Teach students that we can seek escape when things feel big, but we must use our designated space.
Coaching Steps (Model-Lead-Test)
1. Model: "When my work feels super tricky, I feel like shrinking down and hiding under my desk. But look under thereβit's dark, hard, and dusty! I might bump my head. Look over here instead: our Ranger Reset Station has soft cushions, friendly faces, and quiet tools. Both places let me escape the work, but only the Ranger Station keeps me safe and ready to return."
2. Lead: Walk together to look under a desk. Have the student feel how hard the floor is. Then, walk to the Reset Station. Let the student feel the soft cushions and hold a cozy plush toy. Ask: "Which hideout feels cozy and safe?"
3. Test: Give a quick prompt: "Your paper ripped! Show me where a safe Ranger hides!" The student must immediately move toward the Reset Corner rather than crawling under furniture.
Handout Connection: Session 1 Lesson Plan and introductory drawing worksheet, comparing the cozy Reset Corner with a dusty desk bottom.
Session 2
Body Warning Clues (Identifying Flight Somatics)
Goal: Connect classroom triggers with involuntary physical rumbles that tell us we are about to bolt or hide (racing heart, wobbly knees, fast breathing, tight tummy).
Coaching Steps (Model-Lead-Test)
1. Model: "When I hear a loud beep, my tummy gets a big rumble, my legs feel like running, and my heart goes thump-thump-thump! These are my Body Warning Clues . My body is trying to tell me: 'You want to run away!' When I feel these clues, I know it's time to head to the Reset Corner."
2. Lead: Guide the student to complete their Somatic Stress Map. Help them identify where they feel the rumbles: "Do your legs feel wiggly and ready to run? Let's color your legs blue. Does your tummy feel tight? Let's color a red storm in your tummy."
3. Test: Play a mock sound or show a mock hard task. Ask: "Freeze! Touch the part of your body that has a clue!" The student must point to their heart, tummy, or legs to show self-awareness.
Handout Connection: Somatic Stress Map Handout (K-2 outline), coloring in running legs, racing hearts, and tight tummies.
Reset Space Rangers β’ Master Facilitation Guide Page 2 of 4
Phase 2: Traveling to Safety & Using Comfort Tools
Sessions 3 & 4 Facilitation Plans
Session 3
The Reset Runway (Slow Travel vs. Bolting)
Goal: Teach students the safety mechanics of moving to the Reset Space: waving their "Reset Pass," walking with slow, safe "Ranger Steps" (slow heel-to-toe walking), and walking directly without running.
Coaching Steps (Model-Lead-Test)
1. Model: "When I get frustrated, running or sprinting out of the room is dangerous! I might trip or get lost. Instead, I use my Reset Runway . I hold up my Reset card, and I walk with my slow Ranger Steps. Watch: heel-to-toe, slow and steady like a turtle. I walk straight to my safe station."
2. Lead: Set up a mock "Reset Runway" with tape on the floor. Practice walking side-by-side: "Slow steps... feel your feet on the floor. Let's do a countdown: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, safe landing!" Teach them to show the visual "Reset Pass" card to the teacher on their way.
3. Test: Give a trigger: "Oh no, you dropped your blocks!" The student must hold up their card, use slow, safe "Ranger Steps" along the runway, and sit down safely in the Reset Space.
Visual Connection: Use the "Flower and Candle Slides" (adapted as "Reset Space Runway Slides") to practice breathing on the way and upon arrival.
Session 4
Reset Station Tools (Testing Quiet, Comforting Tools)
Goal: Teach the child how to use comforting, quiet tools in the Calm Down Station (finger-tracing paths, soft squishies, plushies) to reset their brain, rather than staying in a state of high alarm.
Coaching Steps (Model-Lead-Test)
1. Model: "When I arrive at my Station, my body is still a little wiggly. I don't throw things. I pick up a quiet tool. Watch: I take this plushie and give it a soft squeeze. Or I take my finger-tracing card, breathe in as I slide my finger up, and breathe out as I slide down. This resets my computer so I can go back to work."
2. Lead: Guide the student to try three tools in the Reset Space: a soft squishy, a plush toy, and a simple shape-tracing card. Have them rate each tool on their "Shape Tracing & Tool Tracker Handout" using happy face emojis.
3. Test: Say: "You are in the Reset Space. Show me how you use your favorite quiet tool to get ready to learn!" Student independently selects their top tool and uses it calmly for 30 seconds.
Handout Connection: Shape Tracing & Tool Tracker Handout, letting K-2 students select and rate their favorite quiet comfort tools.
Reset Space Rangers β’ Master Facilitation Guide Page 3 of 4
Phase 3: Real School Practice & Graduation
Sessions 5 to 8 Facilitation Plans
S5
Storybook Friends
Goal: Spot hiding/running urges in others and help guide them.
Read simple animal stories (e.g., Sammy Squirrel wants to bolt and hide under the teacher's desk). Have student spot Sammy's body warning clues and "guide" Sammy to the safe forest Reset Station.
S6
School Reset Tour
Goal: Practice finding and walking to safe Reset Spaces.
Take a tour of the school (Library, Gym, Classroom). Find the designated calm spots in each area. Practice holding up the pass and walking there with "Slow Ranger Steps." Earn passport stamps.
S7
Reset Space Mission
Goal: Roleplay big pressure and travel to Reset Corner.
Draw simple roleplay cards (e.g., losing a game, a tricky paper). Coach acts out the trigger. Student must notice their rumbles, wave the "Reset Pass," walk slowly, and use a tool. Score on rubric.
S8
Ranger Graduation
Goal: Desk-anchor setup and graduation.
Create the "My Calm Plan" desk card. Complete official graduation ceremony with the "Reset Space Ranger" certificate. Celebrate replacing under-desk hiding with safe Reset Space journeys!
Generalization & Classroom Transition Support
The "Ranger Station" Setup: Ensure the classroom's Reset Station has a soft rug, a divider or small screen for privacy (meeting the escape need), and 2-3 comforting, quiet sensory tools.
Desk Pass Tether: Tape the student's visual "Reset Pass" directly onto their desk corner. The student can touch or tap it to ask to go, eliminating the need to yell or run.
Safe Furniture Block: If a student has a history of hiding under a specific heavy desk or table, work to arrange classroom furniture to limit physical access to those dusty areas, while keeping the pathway to the Reset Station wide and completely clear.
Praise the Safe Transition: Always celebrate the *journey*: "I saw you get frustrated and walk with your slow, safe Ranger Steps to the Station. That was so safe!"

Check-in & Welcome
Welcome student. Explain that we are starting our Reset Space Rangers academy to analyze our body's baseline and replace under-desk hiding with our designated station.
3 - 6 Mins
Model (I Do)
Model shallow chest breathing: "If I get overwhelmed, my chest rises and breathing gets very rapid. This is thoracic breathingβit signals danger and triggers hiding urges! But watch my belly... belly breathing stabilizes my baseline."
6 - 11 Mins
Lead (We Do)
Inspect physical hiding spots: Crawl under a heavy table, touch the cold floor ("Ouch, hard!"). Then walk to the Reset corner. Feel the cushions and squishies. Ask: "Which spot lets us reset safely?"
11 - 14 Mins
Test (You Do)
Present a challenge: "You are stuck on a hard math test! Show me where you go to reset." Student must hold up their pass and walk directly to the Reset corner instead of crawling under furniture.
14 - 15 Mins
Reflection & Wrap-up
Praise performance: "In our next session, we map out exactly how autonomic triggers cause warning rumbles in our bodies so we can catch them early."
Coach's Tip:
3rd-5th graders respond to self-control and science. Presenting the designated Reset corner as a high-performance "bio-reset station" rather than a babyish calm corner completely eliminates resistance.

Reset Space Rangers β’ Phase 1
Somatic Stress Map
Before your autonomic nervous system reaches a sympathetic spike (high-stress fight-or-flight), your body sends physical warnings. Map out where you feel somatic triggers.
Autonomic Zone Mapping
π¨ Highlight the zones where stress alters your respiration or muscle tension!
Somatic stress signs:
Check the physiological stress signals you feel when you are ready to bolt or hide:
Thoracic rapid breathing π€
Tight stomach rumbles π€’
Neck & shoulder contraction π€·
Wobbly, running leg urge π
π‘ Detecting your somatic warning signals early lets you request transition before you bolting occurs.
Describe or draw: What is your primary classroom trigger, and how do you feel it in your body?

Check-in & Review
Welcome student. Quick review of Session 1: "Where do we go when we need to take a safe break? (Ranger Station!). Why not under the desk? (Dark/hard)."
3 - 6 Mins
Model (I Do)
Model experiencing a body warning rumble: "Watch me! If my math work is super hard, my tummy starts to rumble like a volcano. My legs get wobbly and want to run away. My heart goes thump-thump! These are my Body Warning Clues. They are telling me: 'You need to go to the Ranger Station now!'"
6 - 11 Mins
Lead (We Do)
Hand out the Somatic Stress Map and crayons. Ask the student: "Where do you feel the running urge? Let's color your legs blue! Where does your heart beat fast? Let's color your chest red!" Guide them in mapping their own physical cues.
11 - 14 Mins
Test (You Do)
Play a quick "Freeze" game: "A big, loud buzzer goes beep! Freeze! Touch where your body has a warning clue!" Verify that the student can identify and touch their chest, stomach, or legs based on their map.
14 - 15 Mins
Reflection & Wrap-up
Great job finding your clues! "In our next session, we are going to learn how to travel to our station along our special Reset Space Runway using slow, safe Ranger Steps."
Coach's Tip:
Young children often cannot express frustration in words. Teaching them to recognize physiological cues (like wobbly/running legs) gives them a concrete physical anchor to prompt their safe flight alternative.

Grade 3-5 Autonomic Regulation Deck
Slide 1 of 6
State Analysis Sympathetic vs. Parasympathetic Systems
Sympathetic Spike πͺοΈ
Fight-or-Flight. Breathing becomes rapid, thoracic, and shallow. Heart rate and bolting impulses spike.
Parasympathetic Reset π
Rest-and-Recover. Breathing is deep and diaphragmatic. Heart rate drops and safety behaviors stabilize.
Both states let us manage pressure, but only Reset keeps us safe. Slide 2 of 6
Step 1 Detecting the Autonomic Spike
Catch the Somatic Spikes!
Your body triggers autonomic alarm signals before you lose cognitive focus.
Are your shoulders contracting up toward your ears?
Is your pulse thumping fast or tummy rumbling?
Do you feel an urgent impulse to run out or crawl under furniture?
π‘ When you detect these warnings, hold up your Reset Pass!
Early detection is the key to maintaining safe self-control. Slide 3 of 6
Step 2 Strategic Nasal Intake (Smell the Flower)
Inhale Slowly Through Your Nose!
Once you sit safely in the Reset Station, nasal inhalation filters and warms air, expanding your diaphragm.
Imagine **Smelling the Flower** slowly, filling your abdomen. Count to 3:
1
2
3
Ensure your lower chest and abdomen expand, not your shoulders. Slide 4 of 6
Step 3 Extended Mouth Exhalation (Blow out the Candle)
Exhale Gently Through Pursed Lips!
Extended exhalation triggers the vagus nerve, signaling your heart to slow down. The exhalation must be longer than the inhalation.
Imagine **Blowing out the Candle** slowly, making the flame dance. Count to 6:

Check-in & Slides Introduction
Welcome student. Direct instruction on slides: Compare the dark under-desk hideout with the cozy Ranger Station. Show the "Reset Runway" path concept and explain sympathetic vs parasympathetic States.
3 - 6 Mins
Model (I Do)
Model the transition: "Oh no! A hard task! My tummy has a warning rumble. Instead of running, I hold up my Reset Pass. I walk with my **Slow Ranger Steps**βslow, heel-to-toe walking like a turtle. When I sit down at my station, I immediately Smell the Flower (slow nose sniff) and Blow out the Candle (gentle pursed exhalation)."
6 - 11 Mins
Lead (We Do)
Practice walking the taped Runway line together. Prompt: "Show me your slow turtle feet. Good! Heel-to-toe." Once at the Station, practice breathing together 5 times: "Sniff the beautiful flower... 1, 2, 3. Now blow out the candle so gently... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6."
11 - 14 Mins
Test (You Do)
Prompt: "You are drawing, and your crayon breaks! Act out holding up your pass, walking safely on the Runway, sitting, and doing 2 rounds of flower-and-candle breathing." Praise safe, slow movements and quiet breathing.
14 - 15 Mins
Reflection & Wrap-up
Praise: "You are a very safe traveler! In our next session, we are going to explore all the fun, quiet tools we can play with in our Station."
Coach's Tip:
Bolting is often caused by an urgent fight-or-flight impulse. Making the "Ranger Steps" a fun tactile game (walking on tape, heel-to-toe heel clicks) slows down the motor cortex and helps bypass the bolting impulse.

Model drawing Card 3 (The Broken Tower). Say: "Oh no! My tall block tower fell down! (Act out frustration). I feel my tummy warning clue. Instead of screaming or bolting, I wave my Reset Pass and walk with Slow Ranger Steps heel-to-toe to the Station. I pick up my plushie and squeeze it slowly."
5 - 12 Mins
Lead (We Do)
Have the student draw 3 cards from the deck (e.g., Card 1: Tricky Paper, Card 7: Spilled Water, Card 8: Clean-up Alarm). Act out the situation together. Have the student execute the complete routine: Identify the warning clue, hold up their pass, walk safely with Slow Ranger Steps, sit in the station, and use a tool. Score their trials on Page 2.
12 - 14 Mins
Test & Graduation Ceremony
Have the student do 1 final trial completely independently with a surprise card. Monitor to verify they use a safe, quiet, slow transition without prompts. Mark the scores and write a supportive feedback note on their Scorecard.
14 - 15 Mins
Reflection & Wrap-up
Praise their safe actions. "You passed the mission! In our final session next week, we are going to make your desk anchor chart and celebrate your graduation as an official Reset Space Ranger!"
Coach's Tip:
Make the simulation playful rather than stressful. Framing the roleplay as a "superhero mission" helps children feel proud of their compliance and builds a highly positive association with using the Reset Station.
