Essential de-escalation tips, scripts, and adjustments for the classroom.
The Golden Rule
Validate the feeling, never argue the reality.
Their experience feels 100% real to them. Focus on comfort and emotional safety, not on convincing them they are wrong.
1. Signs to Notice
Unseen Stimuli
Appearing to listen to, watch, or talk to things not in the room.
Sudden Suspicion
Sudden unprovoked fear that peers, staff, or cameras are against them.
Disorganized Speech
Jumping rapidly between disconnected thoughts or extreme confusion.
2. In The Moment: DOs & DON'Ts
DO
- ✓ Stay calm & slow: Keep voice low, flat, and steady.
- ✓ Give space: Stand 4–5 feet away, never corner them.
- ✓ Short sentences: Give 1 simple instruction at a time.
- ✓ Wait 5–10 seconds: Allow extra time to process words.
DON'T
- ✗ Don't argue: Never say "That isn't real" or debate facts.
- ✗ Don't play along: Never say you see or hear it too.
- ✗ Don't touch: Avoid physical contact without asking.
- ✗ Don't whisper: Whispering nearby triggers paranoia.
3. Quick Response Scripts
Hearing Voices / Sounds
Say: "I believe you hear that, but I don't hear it right now. It sounds scary. You are safe here with me. Let's take a slow breath."
Paranoid / Feeling Watched
Say: "It sounds really overwhelming to feel unsafe. You are safe in this room. Would you like to move your desk so your back is against the wall?"
4. Top 3 Daily Accommodations

3. Chunked Work
