One Word Wonders
A 4-Day Dyslexia-Friendly Goal Project | Grades 6-7
Why "One Word" Works
Traditional "All About Me" or goal sheets require rapid-fire writing and long sentences, triggering cognitive fatigue for dyslexic learners. By anchoring this project in one single powerful word, we reduce the spelling/drafting load while keeping critical thinking, creativity, and self-expression exceptionally high.
4-Day Pacing & Flow (55-Min Sessions)

Discover & Brainstorm (55 Mins)
Introduce the concept of a "Guiding Word" for the school year. Read aloud several sample words. Students use the non-linear Word Spark Map to brainstorm interests, feelings, and potential words without worrying about spelling or neatness.

Select & Draft (55 Mins)
Students finalize their "One Word." Introduce the Word Warrior Planner. Students use pre-built sentence starters and a spelling bank to draft 3 short paragraphs explaining why they chose their word and how they will live it.

The Poster Canvas (55 Mins)
Students write their final word and drafted sentences onto the large-ruled Poster Template. Provide colored pencils, markers, and printouts. Encourage high-contrast art or symbol mapping inside the illustration box to represent their word visually.

Gallery Walk & Glows (55 Mins)
Hang posters around the room. Pass out sticky notes. Students complete a visual Gallery Walk. They leave positive feedback "Glows" using simple icon checklists on classmates' templates, boosting confidence and connection.

High-Contrast Clean Layouts
Our student planners use soft-toned, high-contrast block boundaries. This blocks distracting peripheral clutter and helps students stay anchored on the question they are working on.
Low Spelling Burden
Rather than blank canvas writing, students receive highly structured frame sentences and a curated visual spelling bank. They only write critical personalized details.
Art as an On-Ramp
Drawing and highlighting provide a non-verbal outlet for deep conceptual comprehension. Art levels the field, allowing classmates to appreciate ideas over orthography.
Text-to-Speech Ready
Worksheets use clear left-aligned headings and structured flow charts that are easy for modern camera scanning readers and screen reading engines to track.
Anchor Word List (Spelling & Scaffold Support)
