Teacher Facilitation Guide
3rd Grade
Modified Instruction
Learning Goal
Students will recognize and select appropriate units of length (inch, foot, yard, and mile) using visual supports and real-world objects.
Materials Needed
Length Legend Cards
12-inch Ruler (with clear markings)
Yardstick
Small "Inch" objects (paperclip, eraser)
Modification Strategy
Color Coding: Pink (Inch), Blue (Foot), Green (Yard), Yellow (Mile).
Visual Language: Focus on "Smallest" vs. "Longest".
Kinesthetic: Use body parts for references (thumb, arm, giant step).
Pacing: One concept at a time; frequent praise for identifying colors/units.
1
Introduction: Meet the Inch
Introduce the Inch using the Pink Legend Card. Show a paperclip. "An inch is small, like your thumb!" Have the student touch their thumb to a ruler's inch mark.
2
Expanding: The Foot & Yard
Show a 12-inch ruler for the Foot (Blue). Explain that 12 small inches make 1 foot. Use the Yardstick for the Yard (Green). Practice taking "Giant Yard Steps" across the room.
3
The Big Mile
Use the Yellow Legend Card for the Mile. Explain that miles are for cars and very long trips. Use a map or a photo of a road.
4
Hands-on Scavenger Hunt
Give the student the "Length Lab Worksheet". Help them find objects in the classroom that match the color-coded sizes. Provide heavy verbal prompting: "Is this pencil blue (foot) or pink (inch)?"
Length Legend Cards Printing Instructions
Cut along the dashed lines to create 4 individual visual reference cards. For best results, print on cardstock and laminate.
