Step-by-Step Guide
Let's Get Started!
FIGURE ME OUT!
How can we use numbers and shapes to create a portrait of ourselves? Let's decode our lives!
Use your Poster worksheet to follow along!

The Power of Numbers
Numbers Tell
Our Story!
Every single day, we use math to measure and describe who we are.
Think about it: how often do you look at a clock, check your shoe size, or count things?
Ages & Dates
How long we have been on Earth!
Daily Routines
What time we do our activities.
Measurements
How tall we grow each year!
Favorites
Our special lucky numbers.
Can you think of a number that describes you?
Slide 2 of 7
Step 1
My Basic Numbers
Let's Count
The Basics!
Find the My Basic Numbers box at the top left of your poster worksheet.
Count up your personal numbers and write them on the line!
My Age
How many birthdays have you had?
Siblings
How many brothers and sisters?
Pets
How many animals at home? (0 is okay!)
Need help counting? Ask a friend or your teacher!

Step 2
My Measuring Tape
How Do We
Measure?
Let's fill out the My Measuring Tape box.
We will measure our height in feet and inches, look at our shoe tag, and think about time!
Height (ft & in)
Example: A student might be 5 feet and 2 inches tall.
Shoe Size
Check the bottom of your shoe or ask a helper to read the size tag!
Bedtime Hour
Example: Write 9 : 30 and circle the PM bubble!
Use a classroom measuring tape with a partner to find your height!

Step 3
My Geometric Face
Draw With
Math Shapes!
On the right side of your poster, find the blank Canvas Frame.
Draw your face using the following recipe card:
- At least 2 Circles (Maybe for your eyes?)
- At least 2 Squares (Maybe for your glasses or nose?)
- At least 1 Triangle (Maybe for your collar or hair?)
Example Doodle Face! Notice the shapes used: Circles, Squares, Triangles!
You can use colored pencils to color in your shapes!

Create Your Own
Equation!
What is your Favorite Number?
We are going to write a simple math puzzle so others can guess it. Circle your math symbol and enter your numbers!
How to fill it out:
1. Choose Addition (+) or Subtraction (-)

Lesson Overview & Objectives
This visual, math-based self-portrait lesson is designed for middle school special education students. By representing personal facts as numerical values, students build concrete connections between math and real-world identities.
Math Domain Counting & Meas.
Grade Level MS Special Ed
Step-by-Step Pacing Guide
1
Warm-Up: Numbers of My Day (10 min)
Project Slide 2. Pass out counters. Direct students to count cubes that equal their age.
2
Guided Modeling (15 min)
Walk through Slides 3 & 4. Teach students to find height/shoe sizes, modeling on a demo poster.
3
Independent Creation (20 min)
Students complete their poster. Assist with Shape Portrait and Equation Challenge boxes.
4
Gallery Walk & Celebrate (15 min)
Display posters. Peers solve the simple equation challenges to reveal favorite numbers.
Visual Accommodations
For Fine-Motor Challenges: Provide plastic shapes (circles, squares, triangles) to arrange physically first before drawing.
For Counting Supports: Use concrete rekenreks, touch-point number lines, or counting bears to find basic numbers.
For Equation Challenge: Utilize a physical number line to jump forward (+) or backward (-) to solve equations.
Facilitation Scripts
When measuring height: "Let's stand up straight against the wall ruler! We will mark where you stop and count the standard feet and remaining inches."
When drawing the portrait: "We need 2 circles for eyes and 2 squares for glasses. Let's trace these stencils together first!"
Discussion Prompts & Reflection Rubric
Debrief Discussion Questions:
- "Was it easier to find your age or your shoe size? Why?"
- "How many circles did we use as a classroom today?"
- "What is one math fact you learned about a teammate?"
Observation Checklist:
- Counted personal stats with high accuracy
- Modeled portrait utilizing required shapes
- Completed simple equation with/without help
Tip: Pre-mark heights on a doorframe before the lesson starts to save transition time. STRICTLY FOR INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF ONLY
