Mastering the Inner Compass: Emotional Regulation for High Schoolers
Lesson Overview
This lesson provides high school students with neurodivergent-friendly tools to identify emotional states, anticipate triggers, and apply regulation strategies like positive self-talk and deep breathing. It moves from direct instruction to social practice.
Duration 60-90 Minutes
Target Skills Self-Awareness, Self-Management
Resources
Inner Compass Slides: Visual guide for classroom instruction.
Trigger Tracker Worksheet: Individualized mapping of stressors.
Reaction Remix Cards: Role-play scenarios for group work.
Personal Power Poster: A creative anchor chart for student lockers or desks.
Pacing & Facilitation
1. The Dashboard Check-In (15 min)
Use the Inner Compass Slides to review the four Zones of Regulation. Focus on the "High School Reality"—being in the Yellow Zone during a difficult test or the Blue Zone when feeling socially excluded.
Discussion Tip: Ask students to name one "Green Zone" activity they do after school.
2. Trigger Mapping (15 min)
Students complete the Trigger Tracker Worksheet . Encourage them to be specific. Instead of "School," encourage "The noisy cafeteria at 12:30."
Teacher Note: Some students may find identifying triggers stressful. Offer a "pre-filled" list of common triggers they can circle if writing is difficult.
3. Strategy Practice: The Remix (20 min)
Break into small groups or pairs. Use the Reaction Remix Cards . Students must act out the scenario and then "remix" it using a specific breathing or self-talk tool.
4. Personal Power Poster (15-20 min)
Individual work time. Students design their Personal Power Poster . This serves as their "Quick Reference" for when they are in the Red or Yellow zones.
Differentiation Strategies
Support
Provide a visual "Menu of Strategies" for the Poster.
Use 1-on-1 scribing for the Trigger Tracker.
Practice breathing 4-count collectively before the activity.
Extension
Have students write a "Letter to My Future Yellow-Zone Self."
Analyze a movie character's triggers and regulation.
