A Multi-Sensory Phonics Adventure

Objective
Students will be able to accurately identify, read, and spell words containing the r-controlled vowel sound /ar/ through multi-sensory activities, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic practice.
The OG Approach
This lesson follows Orton-Gillingham principles by being multi-sensory, explicit, and systematic. It utilizes "Bossy R" logic to explain how the phonogram changes vowel sounds.

Instructional Steps
1. Pirate Chant & Sound Review
5 Mins
• Begin with a pirate-themed greeting: "Ahoy, mateys! Are you ready to find some treasure words today?"
• Quick-fire review of previously learned vowel sounds using flashcards to build automaticity.
• Introduce the sound: "Today, we're on a treasure hunt for the /ar/ sound, like a pirate saying 'Arrr!'"
2. Introduction (Visual & Auditory)
5 Mins
• Show the 'ar' phonogram on the slide deck. Pronounce /ar/ clearly and have students repeat it multiple times.
• Explain the Bossy R rule: "When 'a' and 'r' are a team, the 'r' is like a bossy pirate. It tells the 'a' what to say: 'Arrr!'"
• Display "Picture Power" slides (car, star, farm) and emphasize the sound in context.
3. Multi-Sensory Practice
10 Mins
• Tracing: Have students trace 'a-r' in sand or shaving cream while saying the sound aloud 3 times.
• Word Cards: Show cards. Students: Look (Visual) → Say (Auditory) → Tap (Kinesthetic). Tap sounds on arm: s-t-ar (3 taps).
4. Guided Writing (Whiteboards)

• Dictate words: "star", "farm", "park", "shark". Students sound out and write, underlining the 'ar' team.
• Check whiteboards immediately. Provide corrective feedback for letter formation or blending errors.
5. Cool-Down & Review
3 Mins
• Wrap up: "What sound did we master today?" (Students: /ar/).
• Share out one treasure word learned. Collect worksheets for assessment.
