Strategy 1: The 'Check-In'
Use Slide 3. Explain the internal "mental toggle." Run a 10-second live practice during the session.

Identifying Distractions
We often experience "static" or "buzz" in our brains that pulls our attention away from what we're trying to do. Take one minute to think about things that make it hard for you to focus in class.
Your Distraction List
Share & Connect
Once you've listed a few, share one specific distraction with a partner or with the class. Is it something others struggle with too?

Strategies for staying focused and minimizing distractions in every class.
What is "Focus"
Anyway?
"Focus is the art of knowing what to ignore."
Strategy 01
The Power of "Check-In"
What is it?
A quick mental pause to ask yourself:
"Am I truly listening right now?"
"What is the main idea being discussed?"
How it helps
Catches distractions early and gently redirects your attention back.
Practice Time
Let's try a 10-second check-in now.
Your brain
needs a
compass.
Strategy 02
Environmental Scan & Adjust
Look around: What is physically competing for your attention?
Noisy Neighbor?
Cluttered Desk?
Phone Buzzing?
Small Fixes = Big Focus
Move seats if possible.
Put your phone in your bag.
Tidy your immediate workspace.
Move closer to the front.
Strategy 03
Mindful Movement & Breaks
Recharge
Our brains are not designed to focus for 90 minutes straight.
Subtle Resets:
Deep Breathing
3 deep breaths can clear the "mental fog."
Subtle Stretches
A neck roll or shoulder shrug to release tension.
30-Second Pause
Close your eyes and reset your mental clock.

Teacher Guide

Warm-Up: Brain Buzz
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! To kick things off, I want you to take just one minute to think quietly about anything that makes it hard for you to focus in class. What are some of those distractions, internal or external? Just think about them for a moment."
[PAUSE FOR 1 MINUTE]
"Okay, now turn to a partner, or if you feel comfortable, share one thing that distracts you with the whole class. Just one quick thought."
Teacher Tip: Facilitate brief sharing. Acknowledge common themes: phones, talking, internal thoughts, boredom, etc. Normalizing distraction reduces stigma.

Introduction & Setting the Stage
SHOW SLIDE 1
"Great job sharing! Today, we're going to talk about something really important for all of us: focus . We all have moments where our minds wander, right? But for some of us, especially students with ADHD, maintaining focus can be a daily challenge. This lesson isn't just for those with ADHD; these are strategies that can help everyone improve their concentration."
SHOW SLIDE 2
"So, what does it truly mean to focus? It's not about being perfect and never getting distracted; it's about noticing when your mind drifts and having tools to gently bring it back. Why do you think focusing in class is so important? How can learning to focus help you specifically?"
5 Min
Strategy 1: The 'Check-In'
SHOW SLIDE 3
"Our first strategy is super simple but incredibly powerful: The Power of the Check-In . This means taking a quick mental pause to ask yourself: 'Am I truly listening right now?' 'What's the main idea?' 'Where is my mind wandering to?'"
"It's like a mental reset button. Let's try one together. For 10 seconds, silently ask yourself: 'Am I present in this moment? What is one thing I just heard or saw?'"
5 Min
Strategy 2: Scan & Adjust
SHOW SLIDE 4
"Next up is Environmental Scan & Adjust . This is about looking at your surroundings. Is your desk cluttered? Is your neighbor chatting? What are some small physical adjustments you could make in this classroom right now to reduce distractions?"
5 Min
Strategy 3: Mindful Breaks
SHOW SLIDE 5
"Our brains aren't meant to focus intensely for 90 minutes straight! They need little resets. This doesn't mean leaving the room, but quick, subtle ways to recharge. This could be taking a few deep breaths, doing a quick neck roll, or a 10-second mental pause."
