Focus: Tactile Keyboard Setup & Autopilot Calibration
TVI 1-on-1 Instruction Principles
Students with low vision require deliberate tactile anchoring. Ensure a physical bump dot is placed on the Ctrl key (lower-left) and the Search key (launcher) to anchor their hands. Use hand-under-hand guidance to allow the student to maintain active control while exploring.

Step 1
Tactile Exploration of keyboard (5-10m)
Before powering on the screen reader, guide the student to locate the left corner keys. Help them place their left pinky on Ctrl, ring finger on Alt, and thumb/index on the Search/Launcher key. Affix tactile bump dots here to ease tracking.
Step 2
Autopilot Toggle Drill (10-20m)
Coordinate the three-finger salute: Ctrl + Alt + Z. Practice the "panic muffler": when the voice starts speaking, guide the student's left pinky to tap the Ctrl key (which has the bump dot). Reiterate: "Tap Ctrl to pause and catch your breath."
Step 3
Voice Configuration (20-35m)
Teach the concept of personal speech style. Practice holding Search + Shift while hitting D (Rate up) and S (Rate down). Let the student choose a speed that matches their hearing preference. If they suffer from sensory overload, reduce the volume immediately (Cvox + <).
Low Vision Accommodations & Fatigue Checks
Visual Optimization
Adjust Chromebook resolution (Ctrl + Shift + "+" or "-").
Toggle High Contrast Mode (Search + Ctrl + H) if black-on-white text causes glare.
Keep screen positioned 12-18 inches from face, depending on student's preferred focal distance.
Fatigue Indicators
Eye-rubbing, leaning extremely close to screen, or shifting weight.
Confusion between adjacent keys: offer brief rest and tactile re-checks.
Provide audio-only breaks: turn the screen brightness down to 0% and navigate solely by audio.

The ChromeVox Modifier
To steering your screen reader, you must hold down the core "ChromeVox Keys" first before clicking other navigation keys.
We call this pair of keys the Modifier , or simply "Cvox" .
Hold These Two Keys First:
Search + Shift
"Search" is the Launcher key (circular or magnifying glass icon) directly above the left Shift key.

Reading Element-by-Element
Read the screen in a logical path (top-to-bottom, left-to-right) using the Arrow keys while holding the ChromeVox keys:

Moves reading marker back to the previous page item.

The Left-Hand Anchor (5-10m)
Ensure the left pinky rests on the Shift key and the left thumb or ring finger rests on the Search/Launcher key. Have the student practice holding these down without clicking any other keys, keeping their wrist relaxed.
Step 2
Tactile Arrow Tracking (10-15m)
With the left hand "anchored" on the modifiers, guide the student's right index, middle, and ring fingers to the arrow keys (usually cluster at bottom-right). Use physical re-centering: "Let's find the inverted T."

Linear Beacon Search (15-35m)
Open the digital Linear Reading Practice Worksheet . Have the student use the modifier + right arrow combo to step down the page. Help them listen to ChromeVox reading "Log Entry Alpha," "Beta," and "Gamma" to find the numbers: 4, 7, and 2 .
TVI Troubleshooting Checkpoints
Modifier Key Slippage
Low-vision students often let go of modifiers mid-click, causing the Chromebook to trigger normal keyboard actions. If this happens, re-anchor their left hand and use verbal cues: "Squeeze the steering wheel, now tap Right."
Visual Tracking Relief
The bright orange ChromeVox focus indicator can be made thicker in ChromeOS Settings (Accessibility > Text-to-Speech > ChromeVox Settings). Increase focus border thickness for students with tracking difficulties.
