Lesson Objective
Students will define Cognitive Load and Dual Coding , and explain why visual synthesis is a more effective study strategy than linear note-taking or highlighting.

The Hook: Dual Memory Challenge (10 mins)
Hand out the "Memory Challenge" worksheet face-down. Split the class in half. Side A looks at the word list (Slide 2) for 30 seconds. Side B looks at the diagram (Slide 2) for 30 seconds.

"Why do we forget what we read five minutes after we read it? We're going to find out through a quick challenge."

The Science of Overload (15 mins)
Use Slides 3 and 4 to explain the "Brain Tank" and Cognitive Load. For SPED students, use the computer RAM analogy: if too many apps are open, the computer slows down. Words act as "open apps." Visuals "zip" the apps together.
Discuss: How does it feel when a teacher gives you a 5-page packet of pure text?
Define Dual Coding: Combining text + image for 2x retention.

Guided Discussion: The "Designer" Mindset (15 mins)
Shift the perspective from "Student" to "Information Designer." Use Slide 5 to contrast passive reading vs. active designing.

Keep the timer visible. Use frequent movement (standing up to discuss). Provide a printed copy of the RAM analogy visual for their binder.
For Students with Dyslexia:

Choose a short paragraph from a current history textbook (e.g., The Great Depression). Live-model "chunking" the text on the board. Show how a paragraph becomes a tree. Crucial: Explicitly model choosing the linking verb (e.g., "caused", "led to", "includes").

Workshop: The "We Do" (15 mins)
Students use the "Blueprint Branches" worksheet. Provide a specific short text from their science or history curriculum. Circulate and check that nodes are kept brief.

Peer Review: "Connection Check" (10 mins)
Students swap maps. The partner must be able to "read" the map as a logical sentence (Node + Link + Node). If it doesn't make sense, the link needs a better label.
Level Up: Scaffolding
Level 1 (Heavy Scaffold):
Provide the nodes as "stickers" or pre-cut slips. Students only have to arrange them and draw the linking lines.
