Supporting On-Task Work Completion
Resource Type
Teacher & Para Guide
The IEP Goal
"Given the support of a paraprofessional in the general education setting, the student will demonstrate on-task behavior to complete assigned tasks with 80% accuracy (completing 80% of the assigned work) in 4 out of 5 trials as measured by data collection and work samples."
Paraprofessional Role
1
The "Scaffolding" Prompt: Move from direct verbal prompts to indirect cues (e.g., pointing to the task list) to fade support over time.
2
Task Chunking: Help the student break 20-minute tasks into 5-minute segments using the Task Breakdown Blueprint .
3
Proximity Control: Start nearby and gradually increase distance as the student maintains focus.
Success Criteria
On-Task Definition: Eyes on work, following instructions, and actively producing output relevant to the assignment.
Accuracy: Calculated as the percentage of items or steps completed within the allotted class time.
Trial Definition: One full class period or one specific designated independent work session.

Pro-Tip: Use the Mission Control Tracker to give the student immediate feedback. If they reach 80% completion, celebrate the "Mission Success" to reinforce the behavior. Data should be recorded on the Goal Mastery Data Sheet at the end of each session.

Scaffolded Objectives
01
Short-Term Objective 1: Task Entry
"Given the support of a paraprofessional and a visual task breakdown , the student will demonstrate on-task behavior to complete at least 60% of an assigned task in 4 out of 5 trials."
Focus: Using tools to start and organize work.
Criteria: 60% completion per session.
02
Short-Term Objective 2: Fading Prompts
"Given the support of a paraprofessional in the general education setting, the student will demonstrate on-task behavior to complete at least 75% of an assigned task with no more than 3 verbal redirections in 4 out of 5 trials."

Transitioning to Objective 2: Once the student reaches 60% completion consistently using the Task Breakdown Blueprint , focus on reducing the frequency of verbal prompts. Paraprofessionals should switch to gestural cues (pointing) first before expecting independent task maintenance.

Phase 2
Academic Habits
The Goal
"Given the support of a paraprofessional in the general education setting, the student will demonstrate academic habits (checking a daily planner, organizing materials, and annotating text) with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 trials as measured by behavioral checklists and work samples."
1. Planner Check
Checking the daily schedule and writing down assignments for the day during transition periods.
2. Clear Space
Removing unnecessary items from the desk and gathering all tools (pen, notebook, text) before starting.
3. Annotation
Using the established "Annotation Code" to mark up instructional text while reading or listening.
Implementation for Paraprofessionals
P
Predictive Prompting
"What habit should we start with?" (Wait 5 seconds for student to initiate workspace check before cueing).
V
Visual Cues over Verbal
Tap the Annotation Desk Card or point to the planner instead of speaking. Silence encourages internal self-monitoring.
R
Reinforcement Balance
Praise the action ("I see you've cleared your space! Ready to launch.") rather than the student . Build a sense of efficacy.
Measurement: Use the Habit Hero Checklist daily. "80% accuracy" means the student independently or with minimal prompts executes 4 out of 5 of the targeted habits for that specific trial.

MET?
"Academic habits are the infrastructure of success. Tracking these daily helps the team determine if poor performance is due to lack of skill or lack of organization."
