The Hook: "Broken Mouse" (5 mins)
Ask students: "Who has ever had a mouse or trackpad break?" Discuss how frustrating it is. Challenge them to navigate the computer for the next 40 minutes using only the 'control deck' (keyboard).

Direct Instruction (10 mins)
Use the Focus Cadet Slides . Model finding the focus indicator.
Teacher Tip: Some websites have poor focus indicators. Chrome settings or accessibility extensions can force a high-contrast focus ring for students who need more visual support.

Guided Navigation (15 mins)
Guide students to open a search engine. Ask them to press Tab until they reach the search bar. Prompt: "Don't look at your hands! Look for the glow on the screen."

The Maze Challenge (15 mins)
Distribute the Focus Maze Activity . Students complete the paper-based planning/reflection while practicing on their machines.
Common Cadet Malfunctions
Stuck in a Loop
Sometimes focus gets trapped in a sub-menu. Use Escape to close menus and reset the focus cycle.
Focus is "Invisible"
Explain that the focus ring might be the same color as the background. Encourage them to tap Tab repeatedly to "see where it goes."

The Quick Launch Demo (5 mins)
The teacher models opening three apps (Calculator, Paint, Browser) in under 5 seconds. Ask students: "Did you even see my mouse move?" (Spoiler: It didn't).

Command Key Mastery (10 mins)
Show the Launch Key on the slides. Have students tap it once to open the menu, and then tap it again to close it. Repeat until it becomes muscle memory.

The 3-Letter Rule (10 mins)
Demonstrate that typing just "CAL" brings up Calculator. Have students try different combinations. Prompt: "Try to find the app using as few letters as possible!"

The Search Racer (20 mins)
Distribute the Search Racer Challenge logs. Students run the "race" three times, trying to beat their own time.
Differentiation Tip:
For students with fine motor challenges, focus on accuracy over speed.
For advanced students, have them search for specific files (e.g., "History Report").
