I Need Script Intervention

An 8-session intensive behavioral intervention sequence for students in grades K-2 targeting vocal protesting such as screaming, whining, or saying 'No!' when stuck on work. It teaches the 'I Need' Script replacement behavior: pointing to a 'Help' or 'Break' icon and asking calmly 'Help, please' or 'Break, please'.

The Help Card Setup

Teaches the student how to keep their Help and Break card organized on their desk, and physical deep-breathing steps when they feel stuck on academic work.

The I Need Script

Teaches the core replacement behavior: pointing to a 'Help' or 'Break' icon, or using an 'I Need' scripted phrase like 'Help, please' or 'Break, please' with a calm voice.

The Help Count

Combines the card placement and hand-raising gesture with an internal silent count to regulate impulses and practice waiting calmly for the teacher.

Handling the Wait

Teaches emotional regulation and visual strategies for coping when the teacher is busy and requires the student to wait longer than usual after placing the card.

Eyes and Voice

Refines communication skills by training students to read the teacher's quiet acknowledgment signals (nods, open hand signals, busy states) and wait calmly.

All Day Practice

Focuses on generalizing the replacement behavior ('I Need' Script and pointing to a 'Help' or 'Break' icon) to other school settings like the STEM lab, library, and the art room.

Reviews all skills, celebrates student progress with graduation ceremonies, and sets up maintenance plans for classroom reintegration.
