Signal Detective
Interoception Generalization Toolkit (Generalized Body Cues)
Target Grade:
Rising 4th Grade
Student Profile & Clinical Focus
Current Strength: The student reliably identifies various body cues (breathing, muscle tension, temperature, heart speed) when regulated during calm, 1:1 structured therapy sessions.
Generalization Challenge: Struggles to independently notice and connect these internal somatic signals in real-time during mild dysregulation, academic transitions, or high-energy environments. This toolkit supports generalized interoceptive awareness.
Annual IEP Goal (36-Week)
"By May 2027, when experiencing a transition or a shift in classroom regulation (e.g., academic challenge, sensory transition, change in schedule), the student will independently scan, identify, and verbally report their own somatic body cues (including muscles, breathing, heart speed, or temperature) on a visual check-in guide, connecting these cues to their current regulation level in 4 out of 5 observed opportunities across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by teacher/therapist observation and student self-reports."
Short-Term Benchmarks
1
Co-Regulated Somatic Scans (Weeks 1-12)
When provided with a visual anchor and a verbal prompt during daily transitions (recess to classroom, math to lunch), the student will accurately label at least two of their current body signals (e.g., breathing rate, muscle tension, body heat) with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 opportunities.
2
Semi-Independent Desktop Anchor Use (Weeks 13-24)
During independent academic work, when exhibiting early physical indicators of mild dysregulation (e.g., heavy sighs, shifting in chair, jaw clenching), the student will independently reference their desktop visual signal sheet to identify and point to their active body cues in 3 out of 4 opportunities.
3
Active Generalization & Strategy Link (Weeks 25-36)
In real-time moments of classroom dysregulation (frustration with tasks or small-group conflicts), the student will independently identify their current elevated body signals and choose a corresponding physical calming or resetting strategy in 4 out of 5 tracked situations.
Essential Generalization Strategies
- 1. Whole-Body Routine Scans Prompt a "Body Scan" 2 minutes before high-energy changes. Do not wait for dysregulation to occur.
- 2. Anchor Card Placement Tape a miniature generalized visual scan card directly to the corner of his primary desk for instant physical support.
- 3. Cognitive Reframing Highlight somatic sensations as clinical indicators. "A fast pulse or shallow breath is just a body battery with high power!"
- 4. Dynamic Strategy Pairings Always link specific clues with matching release actions (e.g., "Shallow breaths get long balloon breaths; tight hands get shakes").

Observations & Generalization Milestones
Generalization Goal Checkpost:
Is the student beginning to scan without visual aids? Look for self-initiated physical release (shaking out hands, dropping shoulders) prior to verbalizing state.

Somatic Scan Practice Scenarios
Use these roleplay situations to practice identifying general body signals BEFORE real-time challenges arise.
Scenario 1
The Hard Math Maze
You are working on a tricky math worksheet. You've erased your answer twice, and you don't understand the third problem. Your throat feels tight.
Predict Your Body Clues:
[ ] Fast breathing [ ] Tight hands [ ] Hot face
Generalization Prompt: "Next time you erase an answer, drop your hands on your lap. Are they loose or tight?"
Scenario 2
The Transition Bell
You've been running around outside at recess playing ball. Suddenly, the whistle blows. It's time to walk quietly back inside to silent reading.
Predict Your Body Clues:
[ ] Fast heart [ ] Heavy breathing [ ] Warm skin
Generalization Prompt: "As you cross the classroom doorway, touch your chest. Is your heart battery still high?"
Scenario 3
The Loud Lunchroom
The cafeteria is incredibly loud. Trays are clattering, and voices are bouncing off the high ceiling. You feel a heavy thump-thump inside your ears.
Predict Your Body Clues:
[ ] Shaky stomach [ ] Squeezed jaw [ ] Hot skin
Generalization Prompt: "If your ears hear a lot of noise, scan your shoulders. Are they climbing up to your ears?"
Scenario 4
The Tough Turn
You are playing a tabletop game in a small group. You rolled a low number and got sent back two spaces. You feel like throwing the game piece.
Predict Your Body Clues:
[ ] Fast heart [ ] Hard muscles [ ] Warm cheeks
Generalization Prompt: "Check your fingers on the game piece. Are they squeezing super hard? Let's soften them."
How to use these cards during instruction:
1. Predictive Scanning: Read a scenario card before the transition actually starts. Have the student color or select their expected somatic states.
2. Physical Rehearsal: Practice what the physical reaction feels like. Actually clench hands, then release. This creates motor-memory patterns to access during real-life stressful situations.
