[Fairlawn] De-Escalation Room Protocol
Entering
After the student enters the room, prompt:
Say
“Sit down in the back of the room.”
Ignore unsafe behaviors. Repeat prompt above every 1-2 minutes if needed.
Utilize SCM if needed.
Attention Seeking Behavior
Do not engage.
Say
“If you want to leave this room, I need you to follow my directions. Sit down in the back of the room.”
“If you want to leave, you can show me you’re ready by having a seat in the back of the room.”
Timer
Set timer (2-10 minutes)
Say
“I noticed you’re sitting in the back of the room. I’m going to start a timer. When the time is up, we will have a conversation before returning to class. Are you ready?”
Prime the student that if they get up, leave the back of the room or don’t follow your directions the timer will reset. Offer them one reminder and then follow through with resetting the timer if they are not compliant.
Say
“Your timer will restart because you aren’t following directions. When you’re ready for your timer to start again, have a seat in the back of the room.”

Reflective Conversation
Discuss: (if possible, have student complete reflection sheet assignment in AEA space)
- “What choices did we make at school?”
- “What can we do next time?”
- “How did our choices affect others? How can we make it right?”
Returning to Class
Say
“I need you to follow directions if you want to stay in the classroom. If you aren’t ready to follow directions, we will go back to the reset room.”
“If you are going to be in the classroom, you to follow the group plan and classroom rules.”
Jump start student on work/task and prompt while modeling for teacher/assistant to continue working with the student while praising efforts
