Facilitating the Work Mission
Using high-interest visuals (Mr. Sun, Sprunki, Numberblocks) to build engagement and independence.
Themed Implementation
Preparation
- • Laminate the checklist and provide the 5 interest-based tokens (Mr. Sun, Numbers, Sprunki icons).
- • Place "Mr. Sun" or "Numberblock" cards on the choice board to signal the end goal.
- • Use a dry-erase marker for the check boxes on the right.
Narrative Instruction
- • Use "Mission" language: "We need to collect all 5 friends to reach Choice Time!"
- • Narrate progress: "You earned Mr. Sun! Next is Number 1."
- • Keep verbal prompts minimal—let the visuals do the talking.
Why the Themed Visuals?
Students with autism often show deep interest in specific characters or patterns. Integrating Mr. Sun, Numberblocks, and Sprunki serves two purposes:
Reduces Aversion
Seeing preferred characters within a "work" task makes the task itself feel less demanding and more approachable.
Visual Anchors
Characters act as predictable landmarks in the routine, helping the student track "how much more" until the break.
Agency
Themed choice cards empower the student to communicate their specific desires more accurately.
BCBA Tips for Motivation
High Motivation: If the student is struggling, let them "choose the order" of tokens they earn. Should we earn Sprunki first or Mr. Sun?
Premack Principle: Use the "Numberblocks" video or "Sprunki" music as the reward for finishing the work tokens.
Observation: If the student fixates on a specific token, use that as the *final* token to earn to keep them working through the others.
