Students will identify the main characters and sequence the order in which they entered the mitten from Jan Brett's The Mitten.
Audience
1st Grade, Subseparate Classroom (Low-Mid Level Autism focus).
Materials
- Jan Brett's "The Mitten" book
- Slide Deck: The Mitten Adventure
- Character Sequence Activity (printed/cut)
Prep (10 min)
- • Review Jan Brett's "The Mitten" story flow.
- • Prepare the Slide Deck for display.
- • Print and cut animal manipulatives from the Activity sheet.
- • Prepare a large white cutout of a "mitten" if using physical props.

Guess the Animal Sound
"Good morning, everyone! Let's start with a fun game. Can you make an animal sound?"
Prompt students to make and guess sounds (dog, cat, bear, etc.). This primes them for the animal characters in the story.
