Instructional Sequence
1
Introduction & Hook
5 MINS
"What's Your Task Trouble?"
"Hey everyone! Today we're going to become 'Task Tamers'! Sometimes, even small tasks like getting ready for school or cleaning our room can feel like a giant monster, right? It can make us feel overwhelmed, like we don't know where to start, or that it will take forever! Who has ever felt like that?"
Allow students to share briefly. Explain that they are learning a superpower: breaking down those "task monsters" into tiny, manageable steps.
2
Introducing the Worksheet
5 MINS
Setting the Challenge
- Hand out the Task Tamer Toolkit Worksheet.
- Direct students to "The Task Tamer Challenge" section.
- Brainstorm a common big task (e.g., "Getting Ready for School" or "Cleaning My Desk").
- Model writing the chosen task on the board while students write on their worksheets.
3
Breaking Down the Task
10 MINS
Step-by-Step Power!
- The Recipe Metaphor: Explain that tasks need ingredients (steps) in order.
- Time Estimation: For each step, ask "How long will this take?" Reassure students that estimates don't have to be perfect but help fight "time blindness."
- Attention Alert: Ask students for strategies to stay focused (e.g., set a timer, put phone away).
Circulate and prompt for *tiny* steps. If a student says "Get dressed," prompt them to break it down further if needed (e.g., find socks, put on pants).
4
Overcoming Task Monsters
5 MINS
The Calm Corner
Focus on the Calm Corner section. Discuss what to do when that "overwhelmed" feeling returns.
Coping Actions: Deep breaths, short breaks, asking for help.
Coping Thoughts: "I can do this one step at a time," "I have a plan."
5
Wrap-Up & Summary
5 MINS
Superpower Summary
Congratulate students on becoming Task Tamers. Remind them that practice makes their superpower stronger. "You now have a tool to make big tasks feel smaller!"
