Learning core vocabulary is crucial for AAC users to communicate basic needs, express ideas, and participate. This lesson promotes inclusive communication by teaching all students that there are many ways to "talk."

Warm-up & Introduction (5 Minutes)
Display Slide 1: "Hello! How do we talk?"
"Good morning, everyone! Today, we are going to talk about talking! How do you talk to your friends and teachers?"
[Wait for student responses]
"That's right! Many of us use our voices, like I'm doing now. Some of us might point to things we want, or even draw pictures to tell someone something. Look at this picture!"
Display Slide 2: "Talking with Pictures!"
"Did you know some people use special pictures or devices to help them talk? It's a wonderful way for everyone to share their ideas and feelings. We call this AAC – it means Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It just means using more ways to talk!"

Display Slide 3: "New Word: WANT"
"Our first word is WANT . When you see something you really like, you can say: I WANT ______! Let's try it. Everyone, say 'WANT' with me."
[Wait for chorus: "WANT"]
"Good! Now, if you have your talker, can you find the word 'WANT' on your talker and point to it? If you have your visual card, point to 'WANT'."

"I want this big, shiny apple! What do you want? Think about something you want right now."

"Our next word is MORE . If you have something you really like, and you want another one, or you want to do it again, you can say: MORE, please! Let's say 'MORE' together."

"Now that we've learned 'WANT,' 'MORE,' and 'GO,' let's practice! I'm going to give you a Vocabulary Matching Activity ."
"On this paper, draw a line from the word to the matching picture. For example, 'GO' might match a picture of someone running! Remember to say the word out loud, or point to it on your talker, as you match it!"
