PREPARATION & MATERIALS
- Sound Box Workmat (one for student)
- 3 Manipulatives (unifix cubes, chips, or "bricks")
- Word List: cat, sun, mop, bed, pig, fan, tub, leg
Step 1: I Do (Modeling)
Teacher Script:
"Watch me build the word 'cat'. I will say each sound and move a brick into a box for every sound I hear. /k/ (move brick 1), /a/ (move brick 2), /t/ (move brick 3). 'Cat' has three sounds. Now I slide my finger and blend them: 'cat'."
Step 2: We Do (Guided Practice)
Teacher Script:
"Let's build the word 'sun' together. Ready? What's the first sound? /s/ (move brick together). Middle sound? /u/ (move brick). Last sound? /n/ (move brick). Let's blend it: 'sun'."
* Repeat with 2-3 words from the list until student shows confidence.
Step 3: You Do (Independent Practice)
Teacher Script:
"Now it's your turn to be the builder. Your word is 'mop'. Move a brick for each sound you hear. Tell me the sounds as you move them."
IF THE STUDENT MAKES A MISTAKE:
1. Stop Immediately: Say, "Let's pause there."
2. Model Again: "Listen to me: /m/ /o/ /p/. Your turn."
3. Corrective Practice: Have the student repeat the word segmentation 3 times correctly before moving to the next word.
