Materials Needed

- • Model Student Desk Set
- • Student Desk Mat / Checklist
- • Highlighters & Pen/Pencil
- • Timer for Speed Challenges
Standard: Executive Function Routine
PHASE 1 Hook & Direct Modeling ("I Do") — 15 Mins
Goal: Establish the Purpose & Anchor Each Tool
The 60-Second Hook: "The Scramble vs. The Pro"
Role-play two student entrances: First, enact "The Scramble" (digging through a bottomless backpack, untangling earbuds, crumpled homework falling out, missing pencil). Then enact "The Pro" (backpack opens, 4 items smoothly placed on desk zones in 20 seconds, ready to work). Ask students: "Which student starts the hour calm, and which starts stressed? Organization is not a chore; it is your shield against school stress."
1. Chromebook Routine Tech Zone
- Battery Check: Charged 80%+ at home each night.
- Clamshell Rule: Keep lid at 45° angle until instructions end.
- Desk Placement: Top-center of desk; hands off keys during verbal directions.
2. Student Agenda Routine Memory Zone
- Open Immediately: Flip directly to today's date block.
- Copy Daily Objective: Record assignments from whiteboard.
- The Check-Off Rule: Never close agenda until exit ticket is logged or homework task is verified.
3. Homework Folder Routine Transit Zone
- Two-Pocket System: Left = "Left Behind" (Need to do at home); Right = "Right Here" (Ready to turn in).
- Desk Placement: Upper right corner for rapid collection.
- Rule: No loose unfiled sheets inside the bag!
4. Subject Binder Routine Archive Zone
- Section Dividers: Notes, Handouts, Graded Work.
- Three-Ring Rule: Hole-punch papers immediately—never jam papers into rings unlocked.
- Desk Placement: Under desk shelf or upright on left side.
Teacher Modeling Think-Aloud Script (Say Exactly This)
"Watch my hands: I sit down. My backpack unzips once. First, Chromebook goes center, screen at 45° so I can see you. Second, Agenda flips open to today, pen ready. Third, Homework Folder opens to the Right pocket—my completed math sheet slides out to the corner. Fourth, Binder sits flat on my left. Backpack zips shut and slides under my chair. Total time: 24 seconds. Let's practice together!"

Guided Practice & Systems
Routine Rehearsal & Independence Framework
Target: 100% Habit Acquisition
PHASE 2 Guided Practice ("We Do") — 15 Mins
Students physically rehearse desk configuration with immediate coaching and peer feedback.
Drill 1: The 60-Second Setup Drill
Start with all items zipped inside bags. Start a 60-second visual countdown on the board. Students unpack and position all 4 tools. Run 2 trial rounds to beat the clock.
Drill 2: Scenario Quick-Draw
Call out prompts: "Teacher says turn to page 42 notes!" (Touch Binder); "Class ends in 2 minutes!" (Touch Agenda); "Turn in last night's worksheet!" (Open Homework Folder Right pocket).
PHASE 3 Independent & Audit ("You Do") — 15 Mins
Students complete the Desk Ready Checklist matching activity and conduct a peer desk audit.
Desk Audit Peer Check (5 Mins):
Partners swap seats and verify: Is Chromebook clamshelled? Is Agenda open to today's date? Is homework placed in the Right turn-in pocket? Sign each other's checklist.
Phase 4: Exit Commitment (5 Mins):
Students complete the exit prompt: "The one supply habit I will improve tomorrow is ______ because ______."
Fading Adult Prompts Framework (Path to Independence)
To build authentic autonomy, systematically fade teacher interventions across Weeks 1 through 4:
Level 4: Direct Cue Week 1 (Launch)
Teacher gives explicit step-by-step verbal instructions + teacher points to each item on student desks.
100% Adult Guidance
Level 3: Indirect Cue Week 2
Teacher gives broad question prompts: "Check your 4 essentials. What is missing on your desk right now?"
50% Adult Guidance
Level 2: Visual Prompt Week 3
Teacher is silent. A slide timer displays desk visual. Student references taped Desk Ready card.
20% Adult Guidance
Level 1: Self-Audit Week 4+ (Independent)
Student enters, sets up all 4 tools without any prompt, and records daily agenda independently.
100% Autonomous
Targeted Accommodations & Modifications
ADHD / Executive Dysfunction
Color-code supplies with colored tape (e.g., Red = Homework, Blue = Math Binder). Use visual desk mat showing exact item footprints.
English Language Learners (ELL)
Dual-language labels on folders and binders. Slides include pictorial icons matching physical labels on desk cards.
Motor / Physical Adaptations
Slant board desk placement, accordion-style zipper binders for easier gripping, and digital agenda alternatives on Chromebook.
Mastery Standard: Student arranges all 4 items correctly within 60s across 3 consecutive days at Level 2 prompt or higher.

When entering class, keep the lid tilted down at 45 degrees. Eyes are on the teacher, not glowing screens.
