Blends with L: Level Up!
Session Phase
Tier 3 Intensive
Phase 1
WARM UP
3 MIN
Teacher: "Welcome, [Student's Name] ! Today we're going on an awesome sound adventure to become 'L-Blend Level Uppers'! We're going to learn about some special sounds that blend together. Are you ready?"
"First, let's warm up our ears! I'm going to say some words. If you hear a word that has two sounds blended with the 'L' sound, like in blue, I want you to clap once. If it doesn't have an 'L' blend, just stay super still. Got it? Let's try a few!"
(Refer to the Listen & Clap material for the word list. Observe student's response.)
"Fantastic listening! What sounds did you hear together that made you clap? Like in 'blue' what two sounds were sticking together?"
Phase 2
SLIDES
5 MIN
Slide 1: Welcome
"Great job with our warm-up! Now, let's officially become 'L-Blend Level Uppers'! Look at our first slide... that's you!"
Slide 2: What's an L-Blend?
"So, what is an L-Blend? It's when two consonant friends, like 'b' and 'l', decide to work together! They both make their own sounds, but they're blended together smoothly, almost like a team. Let's practice!"
Slides 3-8: Individual Blends
Strategy: For each slide (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl), have the student repeat the sound three times: "/bl/, /bl/, /bl/."
"Listen to these words: bl ue, bl ock, bl anket. Can you hear the /bl/ sound at the beginning? What other 'bl' word can you think of?" (Repeat for all blends).
Phase 3
TACTILE
7 MIN
"Wow, you've met all our L-Blend friends! Now, let's make them with our hands! We're going to build these blends. As you build each letter, say its sound, and then blend them together."
Pro-Tip for ADHD/Dyslexia:
Use high-sensory materials like kinetic sand or shaving cream. If the student gets restless, have them build the letters "giant sized" using their whole arms in the air.
Phase 4+5
READ & PLAY
Adventure Time: "Let's see if we can find them in a story! I'll read a sentence, and if you hear an L-blend word, you point to it!"
Fishing Game: "Time to go fishing for words! Catch a fish, read the word, and if it has an L-blend, you keep it!"
Slide 9: "You are officially an L-Blend PRO! How does it feel? What was your favorite activity today?"
