Objective
Students with autism using AAC devices will learn and practice simple greetings (e.g., "Hello," "Hi") and basic peer socialization by modeling, AAC-supported practice, and a fun high-five game.

Why
Mastering greetings is a foundational social skill that fosters peer connection and communication confidence. Visuals, AAC support, and game practice cater to diverse learners and build engagement.
Preparation (10 mins)
- Charge and place each student’s AAC device within reach at their table
- Print and laminate Greeting Visual Cards and cut them apart
- Prepare High Five Game Set: shuffle cards and place in a central container
- Queue up the Hello High Five Slide Deck on the class display
- Review core vocabulary and prompts on the AAC Communication Board

Instructional Sequence

5 Mins
Warm-Up and Engagement
- Gather students in a circle near the display
- Show first slide of the Hello High Five Slide Deck with a waving character
- Prompt students to wave and say “Hi” (model on AAC as needed)
- Reinforce each attempt with positive verbal praise or gestures

Modeling Greetings
- Display slides showing peer puppets greeting one another on the Hello High Five Slide Deck
- Teacher uses AAC device to say “Hello, friend!” while modeling wave or high five
- Invite two students at a time to practice greeting peers using the AAC Communication Board and wave/high five motion
- Corrective feedback: model slowly, then have them try again

Guided AAC Practice
- Hand out a Greeting Visual Card to each student
- Students find and select the matching symbol on their AAC device to say “Hello” to a partner
- Partners respond by returning the greeting and offering a high five
- Circulate to support turn-taking and AAC navigation

High Five Game
- Place the High Five Game Set cards face down in the center
- Students take turns drawing a card, reading the greeting prompt (using AAC or visuals), and delivering a high five to a classmate
- Continue until each student has at least two turns
- Use visuals or model as needed for students who need extra support

Closure and Reflection
- Reconvene in the circle and review key words: “Hello,” “Hi,” “Friend,” “High Five” using the AAC Communication Board
- Ask students to demonstrate a greeting one final time
- Praise all efforts and remind them they can use these skills throughout the day
