Purpose & Objectives
This lesson is designed for 2nd-grade students on IEPs who require explicit instruction in blending CVC words and identifying high-frequency sight words. The goal is to move from laborious decoding to smooth, fluent reading through repeated exposure.
CVC Focus
- Short /u/ (bug, sun, mud, cup)
- Short /o/ (hop, log, not)
- Short /a/ (cat)
Sight Word Focus
- the, is, on, has, look
- she, and, with, like
The Fluency Routine

Direct Instruction (Slides)
Use the Garden Grow Slides to model tapping and blending. For IEP students, emphasize the "continuous blending" technique (e.g., sssuuunnn) rather than segmented sounds (s-u-n).

Cold Read (Try 1)
Student reads the passage for 1 minute. Do not correct every error immediately; mark them on your copy. Record the total Words Correct Per Minute (WCPM).

Echo & Choral Reading
Read a sentence, then have the student "echo" it back. Then, read the entire passage together in "choral" style to model expression and phrasing.

Hot Read (Try 3)
After practice, the student reads one final time. Celebrate the growth between the "Cold" and "Hot" reads!
IEP Accommodations
- Visual Supports: Passages include emojis to anchor meaning for students with lower vocabulary or decoding skills.
- Large Print: Font size 24px is used to reduce visual clutter and tracking errors.
- Highlighting: Encourage students to use a yellow highlighter on sight words before reading.
- Reduced Task: If a passage is too long, focus on just the first 3 sentences.
