Reduce auditory/visual clutter. Provide tools for self-regulation without judgment. Regulation is the foundation for learning.
Literal & Clear Language
Avoid ambiguity or sarcasm. Clear, direct communication respects the student's cognitive style and reduces anxiety.
Leverage Interests
Don't see "special interests" as distractions. See them as essential hooks for learning, engagement, and social connection.
Assume Competence
Start with the belief that every student is capable of learning and contributing. Your expectations shape their outcomes.
