My Buddy Room Break
Name:
Date:
A guide to helping my brain and body reset so I can do my best learning.
Part 1
Big Feelings Happen to Everyone
At school, I work hard on reading, math, and teamwork. Sometimes school feels fun and easy. Other times, I might feel frustrated, overwhelmed, worried, or angry. Having big feelings is normal! Everyone has moments when school feels hard.
Part 2
Listening to My Body Clues
Before I get too upset, my body gives me warning signs. My chest might feel tight, my hands might ball into fists, my jaw might clench, or my thoughts race fast. When I notice these clues, my body is telling me: "It is time to pause and take a calm reset."
Part 3
The Buddy Room is a Safe Tool
The Buddy Room is another classroom nearby with a kind teacher and a quiet calm corner. The Buddy Room is never a punishment. It is not for getting in trouble or playing games. It is a peaceful, designated space where I can recharge my battery.
Part 4
How I Appropriately Ask for a Break
I do not run out of the room, knock things over, or yell. Instead, I show responsibility:
I show my teacher my Break Card or give our quiet hand signal.
I wait for my teacher's quiet nod or whisper of approval.
I take my break pass and walking badge safely.
Asking calmly shows self-control and maturity.

Part 5
Walking Safely and Checking In
I walk straight to my assigned Buddy Room. I keep my hands to myself and my voice at level zero. When I arrive, I give a gentle wave or hand my pass to the teacher without disrupting their class. Then, I move quietly to the calm station.
Part 6
Using My 5 Minutes Wisely
I start my 5-minute visual timer. I choose one calm tool from the basket:
🌬️ Deep Box Breaths
🔴 Sensory Squeeze Tool
✏️ Silent Doodle / Journal
Part 7
Quick Check & Reset
When the timer sounds or finishes, my body feels slower and calmer. I fill out my simple Reset Reflection Sheet . Checking in helps me see that my feelings are under control and I am ready to rejoin my class.
Part 8
Returning Proud and Ready
I whisper "thank you" to the buddy teacher and walk back calmly. I hand my completed sheet to my teacher and sit at my desk. My teacher is proud of me for using my 504 tools, and I am proud of myself for taking care of my mind!
"I can recognize my feelings, take a safe break, and come back strong!"

504 Accommodation Rationale
The Buddy Room break is a proactive, non-punitive accommodation designed to support nervous system de-escalation. It is neither detention nor playtime. The goal is to provide a neutral, low-demand environment for 5–7 minutes so the student can regulate executive functioning and return to academic instruction safely.
Three-Phase Procedure
Phase 1 Home Room
Prompt or Request
Student signals or teacher notices early escalation clues (tapping, pacing, head on desk). Offer break quietly: "Would you like your 5-minute reset?" Hand over the lanyard pass.
✓ Keep voice neutral & calm
Phase 2 Buddy Room
Low-Demand Reset
Buddy teacher receives student with a quiet nod. Student sits in calm corner, starts 5-minute visual timer, and chooses one regulation tool. Avoid questioning or processing during active arousal.
✓ Zero academic demands
Phase 3 Return & Re-entry
Reflection & Re-join
Student fills out Reflection Slip. Buddy teacher initials pass. Student returns quietly to home room. Sending teacher offers low-key welcome: "Glad you are back. Let's start with number 2."
✓ Acknowledge self-regulation
Educator Verbal De-Escalation Scripting
Recommended Language (Use This)
"I see your body is working hard. Let's use your reset pass."
"Take your 5 minutes. We will pick up right here when you return."
"Welcome back. Take one deep breath and let's tackle problem one together."
Language to Avoid (Escalates)
"If you can't behave, I'm sending you to the buddy room."
"You just had a break an hour ago, you don't need another one."
"Explain to me right now why you're acting this way."
