Objective
Students will navigate their AAC device to locate specific vocabulary, construct simple phrases, and access different communication pages efficiently.

Proficient AAC device navigation empowers nonverbal individuals to express their thoughts, needs, and desires independently, fostering greater self-advocacy and social engagement.
Prep & Materials
Review the Quest Slide Deck and familiarise yourself with the content.
Print one Mission Log Activity Sheet per student.
Ensure all students have charged and functioning AAC devices .
Verify access to standard vocabulary sets.
Pre-program "I want to say..." or similar starter phrases for demo.
Mission Timeline
0-5 Minutes
Introduction & Warm-Up
Welcome students to the AAC Navigation Quest .
Discuss the connection between device mastery and independent communication.
Review the core structure: Pages vs. Buttons (Slides 1-2).
5-10 Minutes
Demonstration
Use a projected AAC screen to show basic navigation paths.
Model finding high-frequency words: hello, more, help .
Show how to jump between categories: Core -> Food -> Feelings (Slide 3).
Highlight visual cues like color-coded parts of speech if applicable.
10-25 Minutes
The Navigation Quest Activity
Hand out the Mission Log Activity Sheets .
Students work through prompts to find words, pages, and build phrases.
Role of Facilitator: Circulate, observe navigation paths, and provide "hints" rather than direct answers to encourage problem-solving.
Emphasize that mistakes are just part of the exploration (Slide 4).
25-30 Minutes
Wrap-Up & Share
Invite students to share one "hidden" word or page they found today.
Discuss strategies: Did anyone use the search feature? Did you look for colors?
Encourage continued exploration outside of the session (Slide 5).
