Indigenous Nations of NC
Long before European settlers arrived, diverse Native American nations thrived across North Carolina:
- Cherokee: Mountain stewards, rich language & government.
- Lumbee: Southeastern NC, centered along the Lumbee River.
- Catawba, Tuscarora, Coharie, Meherrin, Occaneechi, & Waccamaw Siouan.
Early Milestones
- The Lost Colony (1587): Roanoke Island mystery of early English settlers.
- Halifax Resolves (1776): NC was the 1st colony to call for total independence!
- 12th State: North Carolina officially ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1789.

- Raleigh has been North Carolina's capital city since 1792.
- Leaders from all 100 counties travel to Raleigh to make laws for all of us.
