The Battle That Changed History
October 14, 1066 • Harold Godwinson, William the Conqueror, and the Fate of England
Word Count 234 Words 5 Paragraphs
In October 1066, a famous conflict decided the future of England. King Harold gathered thousands of brave English soldiers at the top of Senlac Hill near the town of Hastings. His loyal men stood shoulder to shoulder and formed a tight wall with their heavy wooden shields. They waited patiently for the enemy.
Across the grassy valley, Duke William of Normandy prepared his powerful army. Norman archers fired sharp arrows toward the hill, and armored knights charged upward on strong horses. Still, the solid English shield wall protected Harold’s troops and resisted every attack. The fierce fighting lasted for hours.
Suddenly, Norman soldiers turned and pretended to retreat down the slope. Many excited English fighters broke their line and chased the fleeing soldiers. This costly move destroyed the shield wall. Norman knights quickly attacked the open gaps, and King Harold died during the battle. William earned a decisive victory.
On Christmas Day, William traveled to Westminster Abbey in London, where church leaders crowned him king. People now called him William the Conqueror. Years later, he ordered royal clerks to list all the land and animals in a special record called the Domesday Book.
Today, history students around the world examine this turning point with great curiosity. They study how one fierce afternoon reshaped an entire kingdom. Future historians will also explore these historic events and will celebrate the lasting impact of this momentous clash.
