Lesson Objectives
- Identify the three main industries of the 19th-century West (Ranching, Mining, Farming).
- Describe at least one primary product for each industry.
- Identify specific environmental or social challenges faced by workers in each industry.

Instructional Steps

Warm-Up: Mystery Bag
Present a closed bag. Pull out items one by one. For each, ask: "What kind of job would someone have if they used or produced this item in the 1800s?"
- • Cow Toy → Rancher/Cowboy
- • Painted Rock → Miner
- • Ear of Corn → Homesteader/Farmer

Video Viewing & Analysis
Watch 4:01–5:02 (Overview) and 6:18–7:38 (Challenges). Instruct students to listen specifically for the products and the hardships mentioned for each group.
Focus Questions:
"Why did these industries grow so fast? What made these jobs difficult?"

Activity: Industry Tri-Fold
Students create a three-panel brochure for the "New West."
- Panel 1: Ranching (Drawing, Product: Beef, Challenge: Rustlers/Drought)
- Panel 2: Mining (Drawing, Product: Gold/Silver, Challenge: Cave-ins/Low Pay)
- Panel 3: Farming (Drawing, Product: Wheat/Corn, Challenge: Locusts/Arid Climate)

Closure: Gallery Walk
Students place brochures on their desks and rotate around the room. Prompt: "Look for one challenge that seems the most difficult to you and one product you use in your life today."
Scaffolding & Extension
Support
Provide a word bank of challenges (Locusts, Cave-ins, Rustlers) for students to choose from. Allow oral identification of products.
Extension
Ask students to write a short "Help Wanted" advertisement for one of the industries, mentioning the perks and the risks.
