Grades 1-2 • Social Studies
Unit Overview
This sequence introduces primary students to the concept of national symbols —special images or objects that represent our country's values, history, and people. Students will examine five key symbols: The American Flag, Bald Eagle, Liberty Bell, White House, and the US Map.
Essential Question
What are symbols, and why are they important to our country?
Key Vocabulary
Symbol, Freedom, Liberty, Independence, Landmark, Nation.
1
Day 1: Sky High Symbols
Objective
Students will identify the American Flag and Bald Eagle and describe what they represent.
The American Flag
Discuss the colors (Red: courage, White: purity, Blue: justice).
Count the 13 stripes (original colonies) and 50 stars (current states).
Discussion: Where have you seen the flag? (Schools, post offices, sports events).
The Bald Eagle
A "living" symbol that represents strength and freedom.
Chosen because it is native to North America and flies high above everything.
Found on the Great Seal and US coins.
Instructional Activity
Introduce the Symbol Snap Cards . Show the Flag and Eagle cards. Have students "turn and talk" about one thing they notice about each image. Use the first 4 slides of the Symbol Scouts Slides .
2
Day 2: Landmark Legends
Objective
Students will recognize the Liberty Bell and the White House as historical landmarks of the US.
The Liberty Bell
Located in Philadelphia, PA.
Rung to mark the reading of the Declaration of Independence.
Famous for its "big crack" and the word Liberty inscribed on it.
The White House
Located in Washington, D.C.
The home and workplace of the US President.
Represents leadership and our government.
Instructional Activity
Use Symbol Scouts Slides (Slides 5-8). For the Liberty Bell, have students "draw" a bell shape in the air. For the White House, ask: "Who is the current President living there?"
3
Day 3: Mapping the Nation
Objective
Students will identify the shape of the US Map and review all symbols through a sorting activity.
The US Map
The map is a symbol of our land and our borders. Explain that we live in one of the 50 states shown on the map. Point out our specific state if possible.
Final Assessment Activity
Distribute the Symbol Sort Challenge . Students will cut out the names of the symbols and paste them under the correct pictures. This serves as a summative assessment for the 3-day sequence.
Teacher Tip: Use the Symbol Snap Cards as a visual word wall for students who need extra support with reading the names.
