The Giant Stone Walls
How mountains shaped the people of ancient Greece.
Let's Read Together
Imagine living in a giant stone bowl. Ancient Greece had huge, rocky mountains everywhere! These mountains were like giant walls of rock.
Because the mountains were so high and steep, it was very hard for people in different towns to visit each other. Each town became like its own little family, tucked safely between the peaks.
Quick Think!
If you wanted to visit a friend in the next town, what would you have to do?
Climb giant, rocky hills
Ride a smooth, flat train
2-Minute Calm Break Step 1 of 2
The Mountain Reach
Stand up tall like a massive mountain. Breathe in deeply as you reach your arms high up to the sky. Hold it, then blow out like a gentle mountain breeze as your arms float back down. Repeat twice.

The Water Roads
How the deep blue seas connected the ancient Greeks.
Let's Read Together
While mountains made traveling by land hard, the Greeks had a secret: the sparkling blue sea ! Ancient Greece was surrounded by water on almost all sides.
They called the sea a highway. People became excellent sailors and built wooden ships. It was much easier to sail a boat on the water than to carry heavy bags over high mountains.
Quick Think!
Why did the ancient Greeks use wooden ships?
To sail and trade easily
To fly over high mountains

Tiny Town Kingdoms
How geography kept the Greeks independent and proud.
Let's Read Together
Because mountains and deep blue seas blocked the roads, the ancient Greeks did not have one big king . Instead, each town grew up completely on its own!
Each town became its own tiny kingdom! They called these small, independent cities city-states . They had their own laws, their own armies, and they were very proud of their homes.
Quick Think!
Why didn't ancient Greece have one big king over the whole land?
Mountains kept them apart
Everyone lived in one city

Farming the Slopes
How Greeks grew food on dry, rocky, and steep hillsides.
Let's Read Together
Ancient Greece did not have wide, flat, grassy soil for growing big wheat fields. Instead, the ground was dry, rocky, and tilted on steep mountain slopes !
But the Greeks were smart. They planted tough olive trees that loved the dry soil, and curly grapevines that climbed sunny hills. They also kept climbing goats that loved jumping on rocks!
Quick Think!
Which animal was an expert climber on the dry mountain rocks?
A climbing mountain goat
A giant river whale
2-Minute Calm Break Step 4 of 5
The Olive Tree Pose
Stand on one leg. Place your other foot gently against your ankle. Bring your hands together at your chest. Once you feel steady, reach your arms high and wide like olive tree branches growing in the sun. Breathe slowly and balance. Switch legs if you like.
