CITY-STATE SHOWDOWN
Athens (Teal) Sparta (Red)
Instructional Intent
This week-long sequence translates the abstract history of ancient Greece into a highly visual, concrete "Sports Team Showdown." By comparing Athens and Sparta to rival sports franchises with completely different playbooks, a student with high social-emotional needs and elementary-level reading skills can access complex political, cultural, and military themes.
The curriculum minimizes text density, replaces complex jargon with relatable metaphors, and integrates tactile sorting and low-stakes roleplay to maintain focus, minimize stress, and build academic confidence.
SEL & Co-Regulation
• Predictable Structure: Keep the daily 5-step flow to lower anxiety.
• Low-Stakes: Avoid forced public speaking; use pair-shares and card sorting.
• Movement Breaks: Allow physical sorting of cards as a active learning rest.
5-Day Pacing & Implementation
Day 1
The Pitch: What is a City-State?
Introduce "City-States" as independent city-kingdoms that acted like modern sports teams. Walk through Showdown Slides 1–4 . Use the map slide to show how mountains separated them like stadium walls.
Day 2
Team Athens: Minds & Mountains
Focus on Athens. Teach the concepts of democracy (voting/sharing power) and philosophy (asking big questions). Present Showdown Slides 5–7 . Complete the first row of the Showdown Worksheet .
Day 3
Team Sparta: Shield & Strength
Focus on Sparta. Explore their military focus (physical training, teamwork, and harsh rules). Present Showdown Slides 8–10 . Complete the second row of the Showdown Worksheet .

Hands-On Activities
5-Day Pacing & Implementation (Cont.)
Day 4
The Sorting Showdown (Tactile Matching)
Cut out and mix up the cards from the Sorting Cards Activity . Guide the student to sort them into "Team Athens" and "Team Sparta" categories. Provide immediate, gentle feedback and celebrate correct classifications.
Day 5
City-State Dilemmas (Scenario Cards)
Use the Scenario Cards Activity . Read each dilemma aloud. Ask: "If you were an Athens team captain, what would you do? What if you were a Sparta captain?" Use these to bridge ancient choices to the student's real life.
De-Escalation & Engagement
If the student shows signs of frustration, sensory overload, or avoidance, pivot immediately using these verbal co-regulation keys:
"Take a breath: We can tackle just one card together."
"Team Choice: Do you want to wear the Blue Athens headband or the Red Sparta headband today?"
"Check-in: If Sparta was a modern team, would they have the loudest coach or the quietest?"
Positive Reinforcement
Praise effort and thinking process rather than memorized historical facts. This builds high resilience.
Effort Praise: "I love how focused you are on finding the Sparta shield."
Strategy Praise: "You sorted that by looking at the color clue. That's a great strategy!"
SEL Connection: "You solved that dilemma like a true team leader."

What is a City-State?
Like Sports Teams!
Imagine if cities today were completely separate countries. Each city has its own:
Logo and Mascot
Specific Set of Rules
Captains (Leaders)
Independent Rivals
In ancient Greece, these cities did not have one single government. They were rival city-states that constantly competed for power and respect.
Unit: Ancient Greek Rivals Slide 2 of 8
The Giant Walls
Mountains & Water
Why didn't they just become one big country?
Greece is covered in huge, rocky mountains and deep oceans. It was extremely hard to travel or talk to people in other cities.
The mountains acted like huge stadium walls separating the teams!
Athens Team Location:
Right next to the sea. Great for ships, trade, and learning!
Sparta Team Location:
Locked in a deep valley between tall mountain ranges.

CITY-STATE DILEMMA CARDS
Low-Stress Peer Discussion
Directions: Cut out these 4 dilemma cards. Grab a partner (or your teacher). Read each card aloud. Discuss the Athens Way and the Sparta Way , then answer the personal connection question!
Dilemma 1 🏫 EDUCATION
The Free-Time Choice
You finished your morning chores. Now, you have some free time before dinner. What will you do?
🦉 Athens: Read a scroll, learn to play a musical instrument, or debate a big idea in the market.
🛡 Sparta: Run a steep mountain trail, lift stones, and practice shield drills with friends.
🗣 Discuss: "Which of these choices sounds more relaxing or fun to you? Why?"
Dilemma 2 ⚖ TEAM LAWS
Making a Big Rule
Your neighborhood needs to make a big rule about where to build a new park. How should you decide?
🦉 Athens: Gather every citizen together, hold a large open vote, and let the majority win.
🛡 Sparta: Ask the two oldest, most experienced captains in town to decide. Trust their rules.
🗣 Discuss: "Is it better when everyone votes, or when wise leaders decide?"
Dilemma 3 ⚓ TRADE
The Missing Supplies
Your town has run out of vital warm blankets. How will you get more for your family?
🦉 Athens: Sail a big wooden merchant ship to other countries to trade olive oil for blankets.
🛡 Sparta: Stay inside the mountain valley, weave rough wool yourself, and make your own blankets.
🗣 Discuss: "Do you prefer buying things or making things yourself?"
Dilemma 4 🛡 TEAMWORK
The Championship Play
The sports game is tied with 10 seconds left. You have the ball. What is your team playbook move?
🦉 Athens: Try a creative, unexpected trick pass to outsmart the defense using your clever wits.
🛡 Sparta: Lock shields with your teammates and push forward together. No fancy individual plays!
🗣 Discuss: "When playing a team sport, do you like clever tricks or tight teamwork?"
