Date:
Event / Scenario
A major flood forces residents of a neighborhood to evacuate for several weeks.
Maya (Age 8)
Lives with her mother and younger brother. She has never experienced a natural disaster before.
Eli (Age 17)
High school senior. His home is damaged, including the computer containing much of his schoolwork.
Mrs. Ramirez (Age 42)
Single parent with two children. Her workplace is also closed because of flood damage.
Mr. Wilson (Age 76)
Lives alone and has lived in the same house for 45 years. His adult children live several states away.
Group Assignment Directions
For each person:
- Identify two factors that could influence their ability to cope.
- Explain how those factors could make coping easier or harder.
- Explain what signs would tell you the event had become a crisis rather than simply remaining stressful.
- If the person were in crisis, identify two possible responses (Emotional, Physical, Behavioral, Social).
- Explain why those responses are reasonable for that person.
Core Concept Cheat-Sheet
Coping: Utilizing skills and supports to handle stress successfully (homeostasis is maintained).
Crisis: Homeostasis is shattered. Normal coping strategies fail completely, causing temporary behavioral/emotional paralysis.
Note: Discuss with your group to answer the questions, but each person will submit their own answers. You may use the answers the group discussed, or your own.
