Lesson 1: Ocean Odyssey (5 Oceans)
SEL Scaffolded
Student Learning Profile (6th Grade Student / 2nd Grade Levels)
This curriculum is specifically engineered to reduce academic anxiety while keeping high-interest geographical content. Our focus is spatial recognition and sensory engagement with no penalty for emotional dysregulation. Keep pacing slow and follow Atlas the Pup!
Expedition Plan & Pacing
1
Warm-Up & Trust Building (Slide 1-3)
Spend 5-10 minutes introducing Atlas. Practice the Wave Breathing activity together on Slide 3. Synchronize your breathing to lower physical heart rate.
2
Active Ocean Discovery (Slide 4-8)
Present one ocean at a time. Do the physical motions prompted by Atlas (e.g., stretching wide for the Pacific, drawing an 'S' for the Atlantic, shivering for the Southern).
3
Hands-On Worksheet Alignment
Transition to the Ocean Explorer Worksheet . Read the matching prompts aloud. Make the matching activity collaborative to eliminate independent stress.
Verbatim Co-Regulation Script
"Today, you are an ocean explorer. We are going to travel with Atlas the Pup. There are no test questions and no tricks here. If we need to stop and take an ice-breathing wave break, we can do that anytime."

SEL SUPPORT & CHECKPOINTS
Lesson 1: De-escalation & Anchoring
Anxiety-Reducing Adaptations
Preventing Academic Freeze (Task Paralysis)
If the student refuses to write or freeze up during matching, shift to pointing. You can say: "Which block looks like the cold Arctic Ocean? Point to it and I can draw the line for you!" Hand ownership back to the student incrementally.
Positive reinforcement via animal stamps
Instead of writing letter grades or standard ticks, focus on marking completion with stamps. The passport motif can be celebrated by pasting a sticker, stamp, or drawing a star in the stamp zone.
The "Engine Running" Check-In System
Throughout the lesson, reference the bottom of the worksheet and Slide 9. If the student signals they are in the "Yellow Zone" (overexcited, wiggly), do another 30-second somatic wave break. If they are in the "Blue Zone" (sluggish), do a full body stretch or stand on tippy-toes like an Arctic Polar Bear.

Lesson 2 Strategy Profile
This lesson builds upon the oceanic base of Voyage 1. We introduce the seven land giants (continents). If the student experiences high anxiety or emotional fatigue, utilize the "Giraffe Stretch" sensory Integration break on Slide 3 immediately to de-escalate.
Expedition Plan & Pacing
1
Interactive Setup (Slide 1-3)
Explain the transition from oceans (water) to continents (land). Do the active Giraffe Stretch on Slide 3. Praise the student's physical participation.
2
Spotted Animal Safari (Slide 4-7)
Explore the continents by grouping them (Asia/Africa, Americas, Europe/Antarctica, Australia). Focus on animal emojis to facilitate visual connection.
3
Passport Journal Completion
Open the Continent Passport Worksheet . Help trace ASIA and AFRICA. Keep feedback 100% positive to ensure task closure.

Co-Regulation Protocols
Low-Pressure Tracing Support
If writing letters raises anxiety, guide the student's hand gently, or trace the letters in the air first. Highlight that handwriting size and line alignment do not need to be perfect. Focus entirely on attempts rather than absolute accuracy.
Somatic Grounding: Animal Movements
Incorporate physical mimics throughout the presentation of slides. Ask the student: "Can you show me a happy koala sleep or a kangaroo jump?" These minor motor outputs release pent-up anxiety and build momentum.
Over-arousal Prevention
If the student becomes over-aroused by the animal theme, immediately step away from the academic sheet. Switch back to Slide 9 ("Safe Landing") . Focus on physical deep chest breathing for 1-2 minutes until stability is restored.
